We’ll see how dumb the trade was as soon as Youk misses significant time with his next back / hip / groin / oblique injury. Take your pick as any one of them is likely to surface any day now. I’m not bashing him, he was one of my favorite players for Boston, but the fact is that he has become prone to these types of injuries. it wasn’t a dumb trade, it was a necessary trade.

Strained achilles? Sounds about the same to me. I haven’t seen the MRI images, and couldn’t interpret them even if I had. I know that Strasburg had the same injury as tommy john. I know that Steven Hawking suffers from the same disease as Lou Gehrig. I know Magic Johnson is afflicted with the same virus Freddy Mercury was. I know that Andy Dirks has the same diagnosed strain that David Ortiz has.

On it’s face, it certainly seems like I’m doing that doesn’t it? Given that I posted this on the Youk column first, I was merely keeping with the theme that it was a dumb trade and thus “ha ha.” So yeah, I see why you say that, but do some homework first, will ya?

Questionable? You know what they say about hindsight? Granted, what they got for Youk (and $5 million) was 10 games of Brent Lillibridge (which is inexcusable), but Youk’s trade value was very low anyway, and who knows when he’ll injure himself again. I guess GMs are supposed to have crystal balls, right?

This is the last thing we needed our best offensive player on the dl that make what 21 different players on the dl we should start looking towards next yr even if we do get second wv spot our rotation is terrible our number one starter is pitching like a number 6 . If we do get the one game playoff and he pitches which is highly likely good chance were done.

Inexcusable hindsight bias and Monday Morning Quarterbacking. Yes, if they knew Ortiz would go down, and only if they knew it, getting rid of Youk would be “questionable.” Getting rid of a disgruntled veteran who needs to start and hasn’t hit to play a talented younger player who has earned the job is never “questionable.” It was essential.

Trading Youkilis wasn’t a bad idea, since he’s a free agent after the season and they have Middlebrooks. But trading him for what they got? Ridiculous. First rule of commodities–don’t sell low. The Red Sox got pennies on the dollar back, and it’s their own fault.

And given their track record over the past couple years, the team should probably fire everyone making the personnel decisions.

David had Achilles issues off and on all last year. He is lucky it hasn’t popped yet. Like many Latino players he is going to age overnight. Though his season has been great to this point, this may be a sign of things to come.
