Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Chris Carpenter is going to have his season-ending surgery to correct his thoracic outlet syndrome today. I presume, as is the case with all athletic surgeries, it will be deemed successful.

His rehab could stretch into next season, when he turns 38. He’s under contract with the Cardinals through 2013.

As competitive as he is, I hope he gets one more season under his belt. If he does decide to retired when his contract ends, then all the best to him and hopefully we see him get a staff position and helps out other pitchers.

Agreed. You hate to see a really good player like Carpenter go out with a surgery.

As much as I despise Chris Carpenter for his thorough domination of my Brewers throughout the years I hate to see him go out with an injury like this. I hope he’s able to give it one more go because when he’s healthy their are not many better pitchers than Chris Carpenter.

He pitched a masterful game against the Phillies last year in the playoffs. Who would have ever thought he’d make a 1-0 lead stand up? Speaking of the Phillies- especially in this picture- he kind of looks like a less-douchey version of Cliff Lee.

And yet, according to player polls, he’s much more douchey than Cliff Lee.
