One reason the pitcher win stat is meaningless is that the pitcher both benefits and suffers from something over which he has absolutely no control – his own team’s offensive production. Do you see why that is ridiculous?

Yeah, because bad pitchers always seem to lead the league in wins. David Price is on pace to be the first 20 game winner in Rays history and you are talking about Justin Verlander’s WAR? Last time I checked, only one pitching stat actually means something and that statistic is WINS and losses. Everything else is just window dressing.

The pitcher win is a dumb statistic. I’m a Rays fan, but I’m much more impressed with Verlander’s 140 IP and 4.2 WAR than with Price’s win total. I understand this blog needs to provide content many times a day and it can’t just write about sabremetrics all the time without losing readers, but it’s frustrating to see ridiculous stats like the pitcher win are still alive and well in mainstream baseball coverage. It’s 2012. Let’s get out of the dark ages already.

Price and Dickey have both got in done with consistency this season. Even if they wavered for 1-2 starts, they have got the job done almost every start.
