That .541 is about 145 points below Pennington's OPS for each of the last two seasons, and about 130 below his career level. He's streaky, but this is something different. At 28, this is his physical prime. Let's hope he can figure it out in Sacramento. But truly, at .676, the team ERA indicates there are quite a few players not far behind him on the potential "sprained bat" list. Yes, I'm looking at you Kurt (.511) , Jemile (.619) and CoCo (.620).

The good news is that the pitching is so good they've held opponents to a .679 OPS so far. So even a slight upgrade at Short would be huge for the team, whether it comes from an outside source, a role player who gets a chance to play now, or a revitalized Pennington.

Trade rumors involving the Jays are almost certainly false. The last rumor that was true involved Halladay. None that followed ever panned out. AA leaks nothing.

I don't know why. I'm not much of a believer in Hechevarria, and I like Escobar with his very modest contract, even if he is struggling this year. I'm just going by the couple of reports that have suggested he's very much available.

Why would the Jays trade Escobar, Matthew? I realize that the Jay's have a MLB ready ss in triple A, but Escobar will probably be moved to second base next year to replace impending free agent Kelly "strikeout" Johnson.
