If I recall correctly, I believe that Brauns extension came after they had offered Fielder that 100 – 5 yr deal, so when he turned it down, I think the Brewers chose to make sure they had one guy long term and choose to offer Braun that money, but I was also hoping that as you stated, it was also an attempt to “keep the band together”.

It may not be the most legendary place to play, but the fans show up, thier attendance avg. last year was 35,077. This year it is 35,076. Hopefully the owner continues to build upon what foundation he has, and being realistic, hopefully in the next 2-4 years the Brewers can go all in again as last year and see what happens.

Isn’t Greinke the same pitcher who did not want to be traded to a large market team? He is a medium sized fish in a small pond (KC and Mil.) and Hamels is a large fish in a large pond. Hamels– carried the weight of a city that didn’t win a championship in 25 years and was the world series MVP. Greinke can dream of being a true ace.

Hamels has better WHIP, H/9, and much more consistent ERA year over year. WAR stats are in Hamels favor just based on consistency, but Greinke had one great year (which I mentioned). K/BB ratio is basically a wash.

I am not saying Greinke isn’t good but Hamels is a better more consistent pitcher that should command more money.

You can weigh Greinke’s mental issues as a major factor or a minor factor, and we’ll see how major league teams weigh it when he signs his next contract, but if you’re just talking about his performance on the mound, he blows Hamels away.

Unless you’re looking at ERA, I guess? But ERA is a terrible measure of what a pitcher’s actually doing for his team. Look at strikeout rate, xFIP, WAR, GB%, K/BB… Hamels has an advantage in walk rate, but Greinke’s no slouch there himself.

None of them are huge advantages, and they’re both great pitchers, but yeah, Greinke’s been a bit better.

I’m still bummed about giving up Cain and Escobar for Grienke and now when he’s we have none!

It would have been fun to see Cain in center field and actually be capable of swinging a bat correctly unlike someone we have in center…

I’ve loved watching Greinke pitch for us and he’s clearly the best pitcher we’ve had since CC but he is not as good as Cole Hamels. I already have an uneasy feeling about offering him 5 yrs 100+. We’ve given up so much to get him we almost have to keep him but at that price I think we should see what kind of prospects we could get this year.

I don’t think that’s true. No big market team is going to offer Grienke a deal coming close to what Hamels will be offered, as they are well aware of Grienke’s mental issues and his inability to handle social/media pressure. You think Boston, Yankees, Philly, Mets, Chicago are going to make big offers to this guy? Not a chance. Thus, if a team were to make an offer to Grienke that even apporaches Hamels, they would simply be bidding against themselves.

Hamels on the other hand has proven he can handle the big stage and will be paid accordingly.

I had hoped that signing of Ryan Braun was a sign that the Brewers were an appealing team to play for and their players might stick together even if it meant making a bit less than they could otherwise find on the open market. The reality of the matter hurts now with Fielder gone and it looking doubtful for Greinke staying.

So you believe Greinke is worth almost as much as Hamels? I think you are crazy. Hamels owns him in virtually every stat with the exception of one good year from Greinke.

You have no idea how happy we O’s fans are that Jones was locked up when he was for that very reason. He was about to play himself right out of what we could (would) offer.

Hamels and Greinke will both go to free agency and hold out as long as they can, each waiting for the other to sign so they can use that deal as leverage. If it was just one of them in a walk year, there might be an early signing. But since it’s the two of them at the same time, this is going to last a while. I would be very, very, very surprised if either of these guys signs a contract before Christmas.

The Brewers tried, thats all they can do, I believe they offered something similar to Fielder before he was a FA, and Boras’ comment was, call me when you want to talk for real.

It does stink that he will probably be traded, he was very fun to watch as a Brewer. Thats part of being a small market team. I do want to give the owner credit for trying retain those players.

As I said before small market teams need to develop a superstar in house and then take a gamble on on hoping they stay healthy and locking someone up longterm heading into thier prime like Braun or Tulo of Col.

Hopefully trading him will only be 1 step back and 2 steps foward next year.

He’s not going to get that kind of money from a small market team, so he needs to pick his poison. Take less and be comfortable or take the money and deal with big market media and expectations.
