Good sign for the Padres. Was hoping he would come back to the AL to see him more often but he’s a great player. He is my youngest sons favorite player and was able to meet him in Chicago, made his wish. The man plays great ball and will help his squad win.

That slash line looks pretty, but it’s mostly due to those first 6 games. In hist last 35 games he is hitting .217/.345/.350 with 4 HR’s and 13 RBI.

This may signify a major change in how the Padres’ brass sees the team. You don’t offer a deal like this unless you think you’re poised to win soon. That would mean the brass thinks very highly of the kids in the upper minors, and that they can help the team within a year or so.

In other words, perhaps the Padres are switching from rebuilding to competing. Our window is approaching!

With Quentin in the lineup, the Padres have average 4.4 runs per game. Without him, they averaged 3.1 runs per game. He’s just the ideal trigger for the team’s offense, and will be paid accordingly. It’s unlikely Encarnacion can have that kind of impact with Bautista, Rasmus and Arencibia also in the lineup.

PETCO hurts all hitters statistics.

.308/.444/.615 on the road, 6 HR in 78 ABs. He was an amazing hitter for the White Sox in 08 before he broke his hand, I think it’s a good signing even though they porbably could have gotten a decent haul for him. Good veteran/power bat to have in the lineup for their rebuilding years.

The only question with Quentin is will he stay healthy? Still, he is 2nd on the team in home runs with only 167 plate appearances, that has to tell you how much they need a power bat. I just think it is a good sign the Padres are signing and not trading, shows they plan to finish off this year strong and hope to compete next year.

~9 mil translates to about 2.5 WAR. That’s about what Quentin is expected to finish around this year.

Considering San Diego has new ownership, signing Quentin is more of a sign that they’re going to be willing to spend.

It’s essentially the Nationals signing Jayson Werth, but to a much more reasonable contract.

If he is worth $27 million, the Jays got a heck of a bargain when they signed Encarnacin.
