He throws one more pitch for the Cubs because he doesn’t want to be in Atlanta for 3 months, and I don’t want his ass. value diminishes with every start, and Delgado for a guy who doesn’t want to help Atlanta win is not a trade I want to make.

now, hbt usually gets their facts straight, but this is way off. the leak that pissed dempster off came from the braves announcing it on their site before it was completed. considering he can’t even pitch til wednesday, why rush him out of the clubhouse that he had called home for nine years. if frank wren had just waited, demp would be in a braves uni today

No, this was no excuse for holding back a trade report. The First Amendment protects a free press’ right to report trade agreements, or trade rumors, or trade speculation. Even when they’re wrong, or premature.

Dempster is behaving like a politician, attacking the media to divert attention from the real issue. Where, does he suppose the reporters got the news about the agreed-upon trade? Most likely, from someone in one or both front offices. The media “blindsided” him, when it was one or both front offices who told reporters before telling him? Sorry, not buying that.

It’s been my experience that the Braves front office plays their cards very close to the chest. There have been plenty of times in the last few years where the first anyone hears of a deal is when the press conference is announced. Braves rumors tend to be more general “Braves shopping for a pitcher” or whatever, not really a specific name, unless it’s reported first by someone in the other city’s media.

I agree for the most part, but even though the reports mostly said it wasn’t a done deal, no report said it was still pending Dempster’s approval. For it to be solid reporting I think reports should have been mentioned that either Dempster hadn’t approved the trade yet or, more likely, it was unknown as to whether he had approved it yet.

No one reported it as a done deal. Mark Bowman of MLB.com was the first to have it and he reported as a trade being “near” or “close.” Others, including Dave O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported it being “close to done” or “near completion.”

This happens with nearly every trade and every trade rumor. It was not an unusual case at all.

This is all about either (a) the Cubs not keeping their player informed; or (b) Dempster flaking after giving initial approval. Yet, despite this, Dempster and Sveum decided to blame the media.

Maybe he just does not want to go. He has 10/5 rights and he can exercise them if he wants to.

Last I checked, Ryan Dempster does not tweet under the pseudonym Paul Sullivan, so the tweet above is second hand and lacking context. I would not look to crucify Dempster or the media based on something like this.

i believe dempster is just taking the pressure off the cubs for not being able to get the deal that was best for him….the dodgers are a better fit for him contractually but the cubs needed some leverage in the braves offerings to make it worth their effort but the dodgers didnt bite…but the braves did and dempster nixes it which is his choice known to all and he gets out of it by blaming the media for what they were told by the organization…

You have a point Craig; however, there would be no trade unless it was approved by Dempster. If he did not approve it, the trade should not have been reported in the media as a done deal. As his manager also seems to have blamed the media, somebody reported a trade that had not yet been finalized and that somebody was probably in Atlanta.

Shouldn’t the media know that when a guy has 10-5 rights trades may not go through right away? Doesn’t that mean they should hold off on running with big reports on trades until all the details are out? If they held back on the report maybe people wouldn’t be mad at the media and/or dempster!

We don’t know that…they may get all the trade rumors right, but obviously all trade rumors/discussions do not result in trades. It is far more likely that rumors are based on real discussions that don’t result in trades, than it is the the media just “got things wrong”. Would you prefer no rumors to ever be reported and teams just announce trades after they are approved and players pass physicals?

What are you folks harping on Craig for? Because he is defending the very media he represents. You wouldn’t do the same??

And in this case, it’s warranted. Excuse me Dempster – how is this the media blindsiding you and not the Cubs? By breaking a story that you claim to have not known about – because the Cubs brass didn’t tell you? By doing their job and reporting what people want to hear? By covering a topic that they are paid to cover? Might be best to just stop talking at this point Ryan.

I have seen Dempster in interviews and seen him on IT and he looks like a funny, personable guy. I have also read stories about what a great teammate his is. But if he is going to continue to be a petulant little bitch about this, I think the Braves had better withdraw this deal ASAP. How many guys in the Atlanta clubhouse right now are watching this unfold and thinking “can’t wait to be this guys teammate when the Dodgers decide they don’t want him?”

And I gotta tell ya, as a Braves fan – I wasn’t too excited about this deal to begin with. Dempster is pitching out of his mind right now but the stats show he is in for a market correction soon. Is that worth a promising 22 year old arm? Let’s pull the plug on this deal right now, realize that this team is more than just one starter away from making any noise in the postseason, and hold out for better in the offseason when Lowe’s and Chippper’s contracts come off the books
