Wasn’t a comparison of talent. GM’s say what they need to say to accomplish a goal. He wants to drive up Upton’s price? Tell everyone he’s not available.

Yeah, but when all anyone is willing to buy is one drink and then expecting to go home with the prize…no dinner, no movie, no gift baskets….then going home alone was the right move, especially when everyone expected him to pick up the cab fare as well.

Agreed. No reason to trade him, but every reason to drum up interest in case someone pulls a major stupid and trades a #1 starter plus their entire farm for him.

Cashman and the Yankees really tried to make a deal happen, but Upton’s price was too high. Apparently, the Yankees made several different offers over the last 2 weeks for him. Upton is a unique talent, but acquiring him, especially for top prospects, doesn’t come without substantial risks.

This was just a way to shake Upton up. I doubt they had any intention of trading him unless someone through them a trade they couldn’t resist

I’m sure the price he was looking at for Upton turned away a few parties. Better to announce that he makes the team better by being there instead of admitting the asking price was much higher than any other team was willing to pay.
