Pretty much. They blew their wad in free agency last year so they weren't going to be able to shell out for Sanchez or even Infante. Ramirez was a sell (relatively) high/sunk cost move. Johnson is a bigger deal but he's also going to bring back better players than either of the other two trades. Even if it's not Olt, they should be able to get a solid young starter or starting position player for him.

I said yesterday that I didn't believe the A's would do this deal. They had to ask about the player, and for a less tight-fisted ownership, the trade may have been in the realm of possibility.

But honestly, as long as the A's make a move at 3rd or short, or catcher, I don't think they'll be sorry about missing out on Hanley for this year. He doesn't look like at impact bat right now, he's negative in the field, and with a .750 OPS, cheaper options are available.

The A's are not about moving major league ready pitching. The Dodgers can afford to play Hanley into shape, he needs to lose some weight and generally improve his fitness, as their financial muscle allows them to make a mistake, should this trade turn into one. It's entirely possible that with some rededication plus the Dodger's nutrition and conditioning coaching, Hanley will become an .850 OPS infielder again. But it probably won't happen this year, and this year is what concerned the A's.

As an A's fan, I can't decide if I'm happy or sad we didn't get Hanley. I guess it all depends on what we would have had to give up, but it sounds like the salary wasn't the stumbling block I thought it would be.

When I first saw that Dodgers trade, I thought wow, the Dodgers really overpayed. Now I am positive of it.

JJ, Heath, and Ozzie to go, and they will be ready to compete.

If they keep getting MLB ready talent for their players it should work out well for them by next season, or 2014 anyway, but man would a little relationship counseling help this team or what?!

The more I read about the deals the Marlins made the more I think it's less about SELL SELL SELL, and more about, let's get rid of some dead weight, get some fresh ready pieces that will help us 2013 and beyond.

To recap:
* Anibal Sanchez. He was going to cost a pretty penny to keep, they exchanged him basically for Jacob Turner who can already start pitching. They also lost Omar Infante, that may have been the price for Turner but at least they had a back up plan.
* Hanley Ramirez. Underperforming star owed a lot of money? Gone in two years anyway? Declining for two straight years? Whiny? Hey the needed to get rid of Jose Reye's gossip partner to pay attention to base runners more. They get Eovaldi in return who is also MLB ready.
* Potential Josh Johnson trade... he's gone after next year. Mike Olt is a good return if they pull it off, the offense is more of a concern than the pitching.

This feels more like smart reloading so the money already due to Reyes and Buerhle has a better chance of paying off.
