To answer your question, they have done very little at the deadline. Occasionally they pick up a complementary piece-for the bullpen for example-and even some of those are waiver deals after the deadline.

Of course, the more important part of the question is "do they have a plan", and the answer to that is emphatically yes. The plan is to balance current needs with the continued health of the organization. And the result has been 3 post-season appearances in four seasons, two of them due to division championships.

I am not optimistic they continue their success this year. The offense needs too much, and the defense has been much below expectations. But I doubt the Rays will pull the trigger on a big deal that costs serious talent leaving the system. It may frustrate fans who love to see their teams in the headlines, but it is not how the Rays do business, and given their track record, they have earned the benefit of the doubt.

This really has potential to change the Rays deadline plans (if they ever had one {honestly, what have they done since 2008}). There might be a LOT riding on that quad of his. The Rays are 2 back of the WC, and picking up Longo is the biggest deadline deal any team will make. With Joyce now healthy, there is no excuse to not make a move to help this team.

They have the chips to get a good young bat. Maybe one of the Alex's on the farm for LaHair. I really want to see them cash in on Shields and Upton while they still can. Both can be replaced from within. With the pickup of Brian Roberts, Zobrist can play the OF full time. That, along with Joyce and Fuld being healthy, Makes Upton very tradeable. Shields and Upton for Michael Morse, Anthony Rendon and Solis/Meyer is something I'd love to see. It helps both clubs immediately.

However, if Longo has another setback, start a firesale on Shields, Farnesworth, Rodney, Pena, Upton and Scott.
