The fact that the Marlins are making non-terrible baseball-related decisions (as opposed to payroll-based or fan pandering moves) is the concern for other teams. Loria used to be counted on to burn the place down on a regular basis and take on goofballs like Zambrano and Guillen as long as they didn’t cost much. If he takes this whole “baseball” thing more seriously it could be a problem for other teams.

Taking into consideration that the Feesh play in the 18th largest market in MLB population-wise (14th on the surface but take into account the four markets with two teams each), they are exactly where they ought to be in terms of attendance. Last year they were second to last, so they've moved up eleven full notches in the rankings. Check your stats before talking through your asshole.

The Marlins should start offering pre all star game ticket packages and second half ticket packages. But then again by next season it will be empty and ownership will have cleaned up financially. How long until he can sell the team without paying the city sometype of penalty?

Wasn’t there a story a few months back where the president (I think that was his title) of the team was speaking at a gathering and he pissed everyone off by talking about how the teams management didn’t really care if the player moves they made were successful or not since they were going to make a fortune from getting the stadium no matter what happened? I believe his words were “we get all the money” or something close to that. It’s amazing that a franchise with two championship titles could be looked on as poorly as this franchise is.

Fact is that beisbol in Florida has been an unmitigated disaster, just like always. New stadium paid for by the fans, new ugly centerfield “art” paid for by the fans, new ridiculous clown-colored uniforms paid for by the fans, new “stars” paid for by the fans …. and an average attendance in Miami that ranks only 18th in the Majors. (Tampa Bay ranks 29th.) Seems like a good argument for contraction of a couple of teams.

You are right, but because people don’t recognize the names (yet) they assume it is a bad deal. The Marlins only mistake is not trading Ramirez when they signed Reyes.

Hate to be that guy, but Loria was not the reason for the fall of the Expos. The 1994 strike was the reason the Expos fell apart ( Montreal AND Toronto’s attendance never recovered either). Take a look back at the attendance #’s and the guys they had to unload because they couldn’t afford them. Loria is a complete db, but the Expos fiasco is on the strike. Pedro, Larry Walker, Moises Alou, Vlad Guerrero, the list goes on. That team was loaded. It is a shame that the strike destroyed them, especially when they were on their way to a World Series title in 94.

I’m confused. It looks like the Marlins made pretty fantastic trades – two MLB-ready SP under the age of 23, and the ability to spend next offseaon. This talk of a fire-sale is beyond overblown. We should be congratulating the Marlins on making sound baseball decisions until there is any evidence of them curtailling spending.

please… if the Phillies unloaded Victorino, Hamels, and Pence after giving all that money recently to Lee, Howard, Rollins, and Papelbon, nobody would say a word.

It’s not like these are bad baseball moves. They are an out-of-contention team unloading soon-to-be free agents and arguably overpaid former stars. That’s what out-of-contention teams SHOULD do.

The Marlins are going nowhere. Hanley Ramirez stinks. Anibal Sanchez is kind of okay but he’s not going to be resigned. Omar Infante s an expensive asset who I don’t have a problem trading away; but I do have a problem who we traded to get him (Dan Uggla). The team is 12.5 back. They have shown zero signs of life.

In short, it’s journalistically and intellectually lazy to criticize these trades because the criticism only stems from past sins. in a vacuum, these trades are not only defensable, but (assuming the prospects have reasonable potential), necessary.

Why? They spent, got underperforming players, and decided to not spend $100 million to field a mediocre team. Better to get prospects and if they’re going to go after big name guys, do it wisely. I’d like to see them get Lincecum, who like Hanley, could benefit from a change of scenery. Any move you make is risky. Players can get hurt, or just not mesh well with new teammates or the coaching staff. I don’t blame Loria at all. No one is really going to the new stadium, and the fans can’t use the excuse of them not spending as their reason for it. They spent, and no one really is going. Maybe Miami isn’t a baseball town. It’s mocked enough as a fair weather fan place, and it’s not like it’s a huge populated area anyways, so maybe MLB should have just let the team leave.

Maybe those upper offices are worried about future stadium financing. This type of stuff certainly should piss off the people who end up paying for these stadiums only to watch a bunch of guys get rich while the team they are supposed to support blows.
