The Rays designate Hideki Matsui for assignment

Hideki Matsui Reuters Reuters

Looks like the end of the road for Godzilla: The Rays have designated Hideki Matsui for assignment.

Matsui was booted to make room on the roster for the recently-acquired Ryan Roberts. From a baseball perspective it’s not a hard call” Matsui was 14-for-95 with two homers and a .435 OPS in 34 games.  There’s clearly nothing left in the tank.

For his career Matsui (likely) finishes at .282/.360/.482 with 175 homers in ten major league seasons. He snagged a World Series ring with the Yankees in 2009 was immensely popular with fans and teammates alike and, of course, played ten superstar seasons with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan before coming here.

If it’s over, and I’m guessing it is, Matsui has left behind a fantastic career.

      So many questions…

How can you accurately measure the size of a porn collection?
When you say “in Japan,” does that mean all his porn is in Japan?
If so, why wouldn’t he have some in the US with him?
What is your source for this tidbit?

        Hope this helps

So, Hall of Famer? Will he there ahead of Ichiro?

    • number42is1 - Jul 25, 2012 at 2:07 PM

I cannot see him getting into the HOF. Hall of Awesome for sure… but i think his short time here will hurt his chances.

    • thefalcon123 - Jul 25, 2012 at 2:41 PM

      This is a joke…right?

      • sdelmonte - Jul 25, 2012 at 4:15 PM

Isn’t it about time a player was inducted for his Japanese and American careers? I think it’s possible that his combined numbers, and his impact on the game, might make him a special case.

If this were basketball or hockey, he’d be a shoo-in. Then again, those are very much Big Hall sports.

      • jon623 - Jul 25, 2012 at 7:08 PM

^ delmonte, I disagree. Nobody should be voted in just because “it’s time to put a japanese/mlb player in the hall.” A player is inducted when he has had an outstanding MLB career, which Matsui has not. He has beeen solid, absolutely. A good player for sure. But, by no means is he HOF worthy.

      • thefalcon123 - Jul 25, 2012 at 7:45 PM

Ahhh…that makes a lot more sense.

For the record, I disagree. But I thought you were saying that he was a HOF on the basis of his MLB stats…which would just be crazy talk.

        Criticism withdrawn!

      • vallewho - Jul 25, 2012 at 7:51 PM

I don’t particularly look at him as a Hall of Famer. But remember he was denied the ROY because of his Japanese pro-experience. So it has to count, right?

I’m a Yankee & Matsui fan Only way Matsui gets to Cooperstown is as Jeter’s guest on Induction Day.

Gonna get some flak here but…
Bout time they sent him down, he was becoming a liability in big game situations

    • jon623 - Jul 25, 2012 at 7:09 PM

You’re worried about catching flak for that? Aww so tender. :) Haha.

the “collection” deserves a plaque in Cooperstown.
