Big Difference though. Junior was pretty chunky (have you seen him lately, he’s even bigger now) when he was finishing up. He was also showing major decline in hitting. Bonds was crushing at an all-time high right up til the end.

Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal spent the first half of the season in Tucson and reported that he lost nearly 20 pounds playing in the heat there. If Bonds truly cycled around Tucson, I can see him losing lots of weight, especially since he stopped the upper body workouts of his playing days.

BTW, Baseball Reference lowered his weight to 185 lbs., his listed weight when he first came up. They did the same with Tony Gwynn, who kept his listed weight at a fictional 199 lbs. the last ten years he played. They now list his weight from 1982, 185 lbs. Apparently, once you retire, we’re supposed to remember you in your prime, not your later years.

I’m not going to sit here and deny steroid use in the NFL, because it’s there too, undoubtedly. But I have been around NFL players before and seen the diet these linemen are on. We’re talking more than an already obese person, one who doesn’t exercise, eats all day in one meal. These guys are fattened up, for lack of a better term. Just by going on a “regular” diet, it’s possible for a lot of these linemen to drop 50 pounds damn near immediately after they stop playing.
