BTW - I agree it was stupid to give time, but it was far from "retroactively". The Nationals MASN teams, showed Zimmerman asking the third base ump asking for time and granting it while the runner was a few steps past third base standing (i.e. not running). But I do agree time should have been given, but it wasn't "retroactively".

I've watched a lot of baseball in my life and I was watching this game on TV yesterday. I've never seem both managers are with two different umpire about two issues (I've seem manager argure the same play with the same ump, but this was way different). Moreover, both managers were right: 1- Lombardozzi had the base and should have got an "out" call at first. 2 - The 3rd base umpirer, should have never granted time, as the play was syill ongoing.

Two managers, two umps and two bad calls. I think there is a movie in there somewhere.

The "time" call was actually by Laz Diaz at 3rd base - in the replays, which MASN tracked down because the announcers were thoroughly befuddled, too, as soon as Lombardozzi starts arguing with Welke, Zimmerman, who is pacing the line with Ransom, asks Diaz for time, as does Flores from home plate. Diaz, for some reason known only to him and God, raises his hands and calls time. Ransom is looking at home plate to see how far off Flores is going to get and he doesn't see Diaz's signal, then he runs. So, time was given at 3rd base and yet, none of the umps said anything, so only Diaz, Flores, and Zimmerman thought it was time out.

First of all, Lombardozzi should have thrown the ball in or asked for time before he started talking. But most of all Welke is a damn terrible umpire if he couldn't see that the ball was caught and both of Lombardozzi's feet touched the base, and Diaz is a worse umpire for not making a clear signal that time was, indeed, out.

This was a bad night for this whole crew, as you might have guessed. Not only were Diaz and Welke just plain wrong on this play, they both hosed various players on checked-swing calls. The home plate ump, Estabrook, was having a seizure the whole game, I think, as that is the only explanation for his strike zone, which ranged from tits-to-toes, but only at certain times even within one at-bat. There is a curveball from Veras he called a strike in the 10th or 11th that has to be the furthest strike out of any recognizable strike zone that I have seen this year. I would not have minded if the Milwaukee fans rioted after this one, if only to put a point on how comical the whole game was from an officiating perspective.

That was a fun game to watch, but this play was a travesty for the umpires. Blown call at first, followed by a comically stupid decision to retroactively call time and send the runner back to third. If the umps are secretly trying to lose their jobs in favor of bots, they're doing a pretty good job.
