I would imagine he would be an upgrade over Chris Stewart for the Yankees. He has not been particularly good offensively or defensively. I wonder how much a new catcher this late in the season messes with the pitchers though.

IMHO, Leon’s hitting isn’t the point. He isn’t that good a defensive catcher, particularly in terms of preventing wild pitches and passed balls.

As I suggested in the thread on Shoppach, the Nats acquiring a veteran rental catcher would be wise. But the focus should be on defense. The offense is good enough to carry a poor-hitting, good-defending backup catcher; any offense from that position would be a bonus.

Says who? Leon has a .794 OPS in the minors this year. His problem is that he is raw, having played only 40 games at AA.

Says the rest of his career, beyond the 40-game sample you just cited. He has a career .665 OPS in nearly 1,500 plate appearances as a minor leaguer, which is terrible.

Not much, he was already DFA, so they will need to release him if they don’t trade. Think a low level B prospect.
