Red Sox get Craig Breslow from Diamondbacks for Scott Podsednik, Matt Albers

It won’t grab many headlines, but the Red Sox and Diamondbacks have made an interesting swap with left-handed reliever Craig Breslow going to Boston and outfielder Scott Podsednik and right-handed reliever Matt Albers going to Arizona.

Breslow, who was acquired by Arizona from Oakland this offseason in the Trevor Cahill/Jarrod Parker/Ryan Cook swap, has a 2.70 ERA and 42/13 K/BB ratio in 43 innings. He’s had similarly strong numbers in past year, with a 3.02 ERA in 322 career innings, and is much more than a situational left-handed because his splits are nearly equal versus righties and lefties.

Podsednik has been playing at Triple-A for the past three weeks, is a spare part at this point in his career, and was available for basically nothing to any team that wanted him last month. Albers found some success in Boston’s bullpen after bouncing around early in his career, throwing 104 innings with a 3.81 ERA since the beginning of last season, but his 93/46 K/BB ratio is significantly less impressive.

This sure seems like a nice move by the Red Sox.

Nice move by Ben. Breslow is still under team control for next season and it frees up a spot on the 40 man (Bailey off the 60 day?).

Could this mean Morales goes back to the rotation?

    I hope so.

      Me too.

If Dick Williams was manager (and not dead), Lester would have been in the pen a month ago.

Seems to me what the Red Sox need is a “game changer” move not a “nice” move. But I guess we’ll see.

    Someone TOOK Matt Albers.

This could also free up space for Morales to become a starter again, which is something he excelled at just a few weeks ago. If this is allowed to happen then very nice move for the sox

“If Dick Williams was manager (and not dead)…..”

Two pretty big “ifs” there, no?

Unfortunately, you’re stuck with Bobby V., who is the manager (and as Youk found out, very much alive).

At least on MLB network Peter Gammons said this trade happened mostly to get Morales in the rotation. If so, AWESOME

I read that comment too. There must be another shoe to drop (Aaron Cook?) to free up a spot in the rotation for Morales. Bucholz, Morales and Dubront are their 3 best starters. It was absolutely criminal that Morales had to go to the pen while Lester threw batting practice. Lester gave up 4 runs in 6 innings and you read media types saying he may have turned the corner. 4 over 6 gets you yanked from a rotation or sent to the pen/minors. I honestly don’t think he can get MLB hitters out.

Posednik – too bad. Joined the team and hit .400 then got hurt and they sent him to AAA again. Wish he were in Boston.

Waiting for that shoe to drop, too. Morales has grown into a pitcher they really need. With Cook still around, is Morales in the bullpen? And what if Dice-K actually is ready at some point? Another thought: Lackey could be back in September. Could. There’s a possibility.

Posednik was a champ while he was here. He was real fun to watch. Albers has been pretty good this season. The D-Backs should enjoy both of their new players.

Yeah, nice to see that Posednik will hopefully get an opportunity to play somewhere. He busted his butt for BOS and did a good job while he was healthy.

I also hope this means this gets Morales back into the rotation. He has been one the bright spots this season. Dubront has been a savior, I cannot imagine how many games below 500 they would be without his wins.
Becket needs to go even if they just cut him and eat his contract.

Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers must not have seen what happens to Matt Albers’ ERA in August and September. He just got ripped off badly.
