You forgot to say you meant bullpen catcher in your first post, would’ve made more sense. Still, I’m someone who grew up with Johnny Bench as my baseball hero, so I always played catcher by preference and did find your using it as a sort of baseball Siberia somewhat irritating.

And I’ve sat in and helped negotiate (non-sports) CBA’s on the labor side on multiple occasions. I’m quite aware of the history of organized labor in this country. And yes, people with the attitude that you’re exhibiting here are one major reasons why there’s a huge divide between management and labor in this day and age. But please, continue to educate me.

Tenured employees flexing their tenure, and hurting the company in the process? They’ve earned that tenure.

Labor laws came about because of hundreds of women and girls dying in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, and hundreds being maimed and killed in meat packing plants. Not because a tenured employee executes their tenure, and hurts the company in doing so.

your right, it is a team game. but how does it make him selfish that he blocked the trade? is he not a team player because of it? maybe he wants to stay in miami. hes still gonna go out and play every night.maybe he didnt want to play for a third different team. maybe he hates the yankees like so many people do and would never wanna play there. personally, id prefer players stay faithful to a team and do what they to make them a winner over players who take millions to play for another team only for the money. or players who demand trades to ‘better’ teams

Well thanks for belaboring the obvious for me. Poor obvious. It’s taken quite a beating today. He has no obligation whatsoever beyond going out and putting in an honest effort, which he clearly does. He wasn’t put on Earth to inconvenience himself enough to live up to your infantile and naive expectations of him. The “team sport” you’re talking about with the wide eyed sentimentality of a ten year old is also a business with management, labor and all the legal and economic paraphernalia that term implies. Lee played this “team sport” well enough for enough years to earn rewards and privileges for his service. There is a natural progression within the game whereby accomplishment gets rewarded with a privileged increase in the “me” factor as the years and stats accumulate. It’s built into the game and both the ownership and the ballplayers have agreed on those terms and signed off on them. Now he chooses to exercise his hard earned rights. Too damned bad about you. Grow up.

No, he’s played his ass off for a nice long career, put up numbers that earned him the contractual control he enjoys, likes being as close to his family and cattle businesses as possible, and he comfortable where he is. And chances are he’s also learned during that time that there are more meaningful and important things in life than “winning” if it means playing someplace in which you’re not happy living – big congested urbs like LA or New York, for example. As long as he goes out every day and plays hard – which he does – you’ve got no right to criticize him. He’s worked a lot harder over his career for the right to make his choices than you have to question them.

Exibitsman, you’re a blowhard and a moron and you don’t know Carlos Lee from a hole in the wall – or the one in your head. You’re just parroting a sound bite that you think plants you on top of some idiotic pedestal. He’s a veteran near the end of his career who has earned his trade control rights, and has businesses and family in Texas and he’s as far away from as he wants to get. And that’s it. Who else is he supposed to “care about,” anyway – the employers with whom he negotiated his contract? He’s played well for the Marlins and he played well for the Astros, and that’s all he “owes” anybody.

Since people don’t like working for people who have god complexes, I don’t think you’d have to worry about it for very long, because no one would want to work for you. People like you are exactly why labor laws, CBA’s, and organized workforces were created and are needed.

Also, what YOU would do has nothing to do with this. Carlos Lee has a contract and is a tenured MLB player. You’re at the mercy of the CBA, which means…you can’t really do anything about it. Send him home, which I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if he were playing for you, but you’re still signing his paycheck every week.

Why? If I have an opportunity to improve my business, and a contracted employee hinders that, I don’t reward him with an “Okay, no hard feelings” approach. That employee gets coffee for everyone everyday, cleans the wastebaskets everyday, and uses an IBM 386. Since Carlos Lee can’t do any of those, he now becomes my bullpen catcher. If he doesn’t like it, I void his contract.

Why do you work where you do? What would it mean to you to leave? Why would you chose not to move when you know your salary will not change? (I know there’s post season $).

Players aren’t necessarily any different than anyone else.
