Seriously, what’s “YooHoo?” I’d look it up on the google but Kiwi taught me caution after his misadventures with the anal glands of cats (not on the Church computer, man!). Leaving the prospect talk out of it, because there’s no way the Orioles would send Schoop to the Phillies in a Blanton deal…what does it say about Peter Angelos and the Orioles front office that they are unwilling to assume the $3 million in the deal? In baseball terms that’s not a lot of money. If it means giving up less talent than they otherwise would, it’s a no brainer.

I don’t like the thought that if they really do want a guy, Angelos wouldn’t let Duquette take on a little salary in order to send lesser prospects. I’m concerned with how this is going to effect Duquette’s ability to make deals down the road.

You can’t get a top prospect for a below league average pitcher…at least, not from a non-stupid GM. They should be grateful to get salary relief, even if they eat all of the remaining money, they still shouldn’t be able to get anything more than a 5th OFer type prospect for Blanton….he just doesn’t have much value.

Half of the current O’s staff including AAA is a less than .500 pitcher with a 4+ ERA, what exactly does Blanton bring to the table that they don’t already have? Have you seen this guys number against the AL East?

I agree that you don’t trade one of those guys for Blanton, personally I wouldn’t trade anyone for him; However, if you want to get a guy like Headley or another key contributor, you are going to have to trade one of those guys. I agree with BMORELIKEME that packing Hoes or Avery, plus some others is something that will have to happen.

Understandable, but you tell me- is a bottom of the rotation guy like Blanton worth getting rid of any of your top 5 prospects? Considering Grienke, Josh Johnson, Garza and Dempster are all either off the market or not likely to happen, there’s really no #1 or #2 starting pitchers out there anymore, and I see no need to trade away our top talent for a guy who has a sub-par record, and gets lit up by the AL consistently. I’d rather see no trade if it means saving these particular prospects. I’d make the move for a mid-level prospect plus Pearce. Fair shake says this guy.

there’s an increased penalty next year if they can’t get under the luxury tax this season…THAT’s why 3 million matters.

Besides, Blanton’s gone at the end of the year, would you rather the eat the money, owe more in luxury tax next year, and get nothing for him except maybe a sandwich pick that helps in 5-6 years if you’re lucky?

I think lessick is close, but not quite there. Phils are looking for a top prospect OR salary relief. If they’re footing the bill for Blanton, they want Schoop. If Baltimore’s paying Blanton’s salary, they’ll ask for a lesser prospect.

I’d deal one of Avery/Hoes as they are very redundant and our OF is set in CF/RF for the foreseable future, and if that doesn’t get it done, I’d add a 10-20 type prospect with high ceiling/high risk. If that doesn’t get it done, I hang up the phone.

No way Philly gets Schoop for Blanton…that’s an awful deal for the O’s.

It would be more along the lines of 2 single A guys no ones ever heard of. Especially if the Phils expect the O’s to take on salary.

For 3 Million, why even ship him? The money is already spent so to speak, and he has no salary next year anyway.The goal is to free up salary for next year and the coming years OR get someone in return that could help in the next 2-3 years. Sounds like the prospect they’re offering will not be much help if they keep the existing top of the rotation together, and realistically, they only need 1 starter, who may end up just being Kyle Kendrick anyways.

We need MLB relief pitchers in Philly, and outfielders that can hit at a clip > .270 on a consistent basis. Thats about it.

Just an FYI… the O’s don’t have a very deep farm system, so who exactly are they supposed to trade if you add all those names? You have to trade talent to get talent.

I’m not saying that Joe is the missing piece for a championship, but damn Baltimore, if you think you have a shot at making the playoffs and doing some damage invest the 3 Mil. You’ll make that up in the playoffs.

This would be a fairly unsexy acquisition for the O’s, and surely not one that would have the fans praising Angelos for being active, BUT it would help this rotation quite a bit and the thought of ending August with Chen, Hammel returning from the DL, Britton who (if we forget the 1st inning of his last outting) looks solid, Blanton and a surprisingly strong Miggy Gonzo is not a terrible thing for a team whose opening day starter is now in Norfolk along with Matusz, and continues to allow Tommy H(unte)R, who has 3 pitches- fastball down the middle, slower fastball down the middle, and breaking ball that doesn’t break down the middle- to keep riding his roller coaster of success/failure. It would also allow us to make some bullpen adjustments (I’d personally have no problem with Hunter or Arrieta in the pen right now) which is necessary at this stage in the game (please send Socolocolocolovich back down where he can appear better than he is).

All I ask is whatever moves we do make, please don’t trade away guys like Bundy, Hoes, Avery, Machado and Schoop. That’s (potentially) our future and not worth rentals (suck it Miami Marlins).

That’s about right. Philadelphia wants a reasonable prospect (#3 prospect Schoop has been named) and salary relief. Baltimore would likely prefer providing salary relief and a throwaway prospect. It’s all about level of prospect and amount of relief.

To me, Baltimore taking on all of the salary and not giving up much would be the way to get it done, but Philadelphia seems to want a decent player. Deal might not happen.

I don’t think there would be any benefit to the Phils with that deal. If the Phils are looking to shed salary I doubt they’d pay $1.5mil to not have him, especially with only getting a mid-level prospect. And why would the Orioles pay $3mil and give away a top prospect for Blanton? The deal dying makes plenty sense.
