Fan leaves baby in stroller to go get an Andrew McCutchen autograph

Aug 1, 2012, 9:12 AM EDT

People in Pittsburgh are getting excited about the Pirates. That’s good!  Maybe too excited, however:

And when it was suggested that there was no baby in the stroller:

Go Bucs!

    People: Still the worst.

    • cur68 - Aug 1, 2012 at 10:59 AM

Hey, no worries. If that guy wearing all the gear in the white shirt is dad, you bet he’s gonna pay. When his wife sees this he is DONE. I recall from my ex’s behaviour after having a baby that if a new mom feels you were in some way being negligent with her child (keeping in mind that after having a baby most ladies aren’t too reasonable) the term “Nuclear Winter” should describe his life for the next month or so. Dude’s gonna pay.

  2. Tapps - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:20 AM

Hey now….this might not be in Pittsburgh. The Pirates have been in Houston/Chicago for a week.

  3. brewcrewfan54 - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:21 AM

Is this really that bad? How long was the person away for? Did they completley quit paying attention to the baby? I’m not a parent but people take their kids to the park and let them run around while not being right next to them. As long as the parent is paying attention to who and what is going on around the baby I don’t think this is the worst thing ever.

    • Chip Caray's Eyebrows - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:27 AM

      Is this really that bad?

      Why yes. Yes it is.

      I’m not a parent

      Clearly.

      • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:40 AM

Once again its a picture. Does that picture fairly represent what’s going on? Maybe McCutchen doesn’t realize that dad or mom is barely out of the frame.

      • CJ - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:47 AM

We can hope it’s not a fair representation, but if the kid is small enough to need a stroller at a baseball game, you shouldn’t be more than 10 feet away. It’s a crowded area, and in the world we live in today, you don’t know what kind of drunken idiots/ predators / pedophiles / whatever are around you.

From you perspective as a non-parent, that probably sounds paranoid, but it’s the reality of the world we live in today. I hope you can grasp that before you become a parent. Don’t take that critically, just being sincere.

      • Chip Caray's Eyebrows - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:49 AM

Out of frame is too far. In fact, even if the guy with the backpack is the parent … it’s still too far. You’re not going to convince me otherwise. Sorry.

I may have made the same argument you’re making once upon a time, but experience has a way of quickly exposing and squelching such ignorance. Actually having a baby and knowing how much her safety and well-being consumes my thoughts and actions makes my opinion on this matter completely irreversible.

    • The Common Man - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:27 AM

I like that you liken allowing a kid who’s old enough to run around a playground while you stand around and watch them and talk about Dancing with the Stars with other parents to leaving your infant in a stroller, and walking away to clamor for an autograph from a baseball player. You’re not a parent? Who could possibly tell?

      • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:32 AM

ObviouslyI’m going to be the bad guy here because outrage is the only acceptable reaction to these type of stories.

      • The Common Man - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:34 AM

No, outrage is probably not called for here. Shaking your head and marveling at humanity’s selfishness and stupidity, yes. I’m just saying that there are standards for responsible parenting, and this person pretty clearly fell short, if McCutchen’s account is accurate.

    • easports82 - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:29 AM

Kid in a stroller should never be left alone. Not the worst parent ever, but definitely trying to make a case for themselves.

    • magicrat13 - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:39 AM

      “I’m not a parent”

Believe me, from reading your post you did not have to include that….That much was obvious…

    • southpaw2k - Aug 1, 2012 at 12:16 PM

You are adding context to the story when context is not necessary. The parent left an infant unattended in order to get an autograph. That is all the information that is necessary to understand the parent was being completely irresponsible.

I’m not a parent either, and yet common sense tells me any responsible parent would either A.) carry the infant in his/her arms while trying to get an autograph, B.) ask someone else in attendance with them to get the autograph, or C.) not worry about getting the autograph at all.

  4. Bryz - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:30 AM

First LoMo, now McCutchen…. wow, these baseball players have really been baby-crazy lately.

    • number42is1 - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:34 AM

yes… this is the SAME EXACT thing about breast feeding in public.

      • cleverbob - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:48 AM

Well, maybe if Morrison took a picture…

      • Bryz - Aug 1, 2012 at 6:12 PM

It was a shot at humor. Judging by the ratio of thumbs, I failed. Calm down.

  5. exibitsman - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:52 AM

@ brewjerkfan. he seen the. baby in the stroller. he’s just cares about signing his damn autograph. selfish punk.

    • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 1, 2012 at 9:57 AM

Thats a clever play on words on my screenname. And your opinion on Carlos Lee is still stupid.

  6. gustavov8 - Aug 1, 2012 at 10:28 AM

at least if the Pirates wins the Division Series this year, in 8 or 10 years this crazy dad can tell his/her son/daughter what he did to get McCutchen’s autograph! It’s fun!

  7. spytdi - Aug 1, 2012 at 10:32 AM

Chill out Chip. The world we live in hasn’t changed that that much over past 20-30 years with the exception of the media attention and technology. I’m certain you don’t realize that when you text people a pic of your morning poop at work, it’s what you’ve always done, but I’m sure that before that cellphone was in the stall you just had to tell people how impressive it was.

  8. theawesomersfranchise - Aug 1, 2012 at 10:45 AM

Kids can be removed from strollers and temporarily carried, not sure if this is the case though

    • theawesomersfranchise - Aug 1, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Ah AMC seen a baby in there, damn. Messed up priories are messed up

  9. ken49ers - Aug 1, 2012 at 10:50 AM

    typical pittspuke fans… dumb

  10. phillyphreak - Aug 1, 2012 at 10:52 AM

Pretty shoddy move by the parent/s there. Anyone know if McCutchen said anything? That probably would be more helpful than snapping a picture and tweeting it.

  11. theawesomersfranchise - Aug 1, 2012 at 10:57 AM

I think we already know how people from Pennsylvania think….

    Sport Heroes > Children
Isn’t that right Joe Pa apologists?

    • cleverbob - Aug 1, 2012 at 2:25 PM

Hey pal, lumping us norms in with those West Pennsyltuckians is uncalled for.

  12. CJ - Aug 1, 2012 at 11:09 AM

yes, let’s categorize an entire state as a bunch of child predators. That’s a sensible reaction. Actually, there are people that went to PSU from out of state, so they’re child predators too. So everyone who’s even driven through or visited the state of PA are also child predators.

    Moron.

  13. exibitsman - Aug 1, 2012 at 11:20 AM

@brewjerkfan. Carlos Lee is still very lazy. selfish overweight average ball player.!!!!!!!

    • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 1, 2012 at 12:10 PM

      And you still suck.

    • brewcrewfan54 - Aug 1, 2012 at 12:10 PM

      Alright. Good conversation.

  14. mkd - Aug 1, 2012 at 12:22 PM

You’re supposed to use the stroller as a battering ram to get to the front of the pack and then tell McCutchen the autograph is for the kid. This is not hard.

  15. blabidibla - Aug 1, 2012 at 1:01 PM

    Jeez, What terrible parenting.

Every Father and Mother in their right mind knows you USE THE CHILD to fight your way through the crowd and gain the attention of the player for the autograph you seek.

    • blabidibla - Aug 1, 2012 at 1:03 PM

Dang, I read through most every response only to look up after my own hits the board and see I was beat to the punchline by the previous poster.

  16. sorryimbusypolishingmy6lombardis - Aug 1, 2012 at 2:04 PM

In all fairness, the Pirates haven’t had a player worthy enough of abandoning one’s child in a very long time!!! Also I must confess that I too left my daughter sitting in her seat at the Marlins games earlier this season to go get Cutch’s sig. But my daughter is 12 and is a black belt in tae kwon do, not defenseless in a stoller. That would have been a tougher call for me to make!!

  17. onbucky96 - Aug 1, 2012 at 4:15 PM

So. I’m sure there was someone watching the kid, alone, in a stroller. Are they filming Home Alone 4?
