Craig, I think you seem to forget how many Boston fans actually root for the team. To clarify, when I say team, I include Beckett within the team.

I know it might sound odd, but every single RS fan was not at the game last night. Somehow, I might even bet that a few of the good folks there didn’t blast Beckett on his way out.

But, hey, why not? Feel free to treat every RS fan exactly the same. O wait. You just did.

Let’s just say that Beckett has over the course of the last 12 mos. very well earned the boos he received yesterday. Between March of 2011 and September of 2011, Beckett gained nearly 40 lbs. He publicly stated that baseball was not his “priority.” He pitched like garbage when it counted most, and that was not for lack of skill, but lack of effort and caring. He dissed his teammates, his manager, the team’s front office and the training staff. He and Lackey are the principal cause that Tito got fired. He repeatedly refused to do team mandated workouts, not just in 2011, but this season as well (confirmed by Gary Tanguay and several other journalists who witnessed this, some on a daily basis). He’s refused to accept responsibility for his actions. He has zero ability to be contrite, even when he and the whole world knows he has been wrong. In short, Beckett has done the “unforgiveable” thing that no one can ever do and remain unscathed. He has betrayed the trust of those who placed their utmost faith in him.

Beckett could go 96-0 with a 0.25 ERA and 0.010 WHIP, and I’d still despise him. He is the proverbial guy I don’t ever want on my team, no matter what the price for getting rid of him might be. His attitude is like a cancer. Booing is the least of his worries. If I had my way, he’d be run out of town by an angry mob carrying pitchforks and torches. You have to work hard at being a jackass to make me feel like that. Beckett has done so.

I understand. We will just agree to disagree on Beckett. I’m not saying he’s Vlad the Impaler but I would also say he’s no Dale Murphy either. Of course it’s somewhat hypocritical when fans turn on a guy when he stops producing when they were cheering the same prick when he was a stud. I’m not sure that hypocrisy is limited to Boston, however. I think most fans are like that. Some are worse than others of course but a lot of good players have been booed in a lot of cities for whatever reason when they stop producing. I just feel that it’s easier to turn on a guy like Beckett who just oozes a “f*** you” personality in combination with some questionable off field decisions. Ok, I’m done. I’m not even a Boston guy. I’m spending way too much time with this.

I honestly don’t give a crap that Dempster isn’t with the Braves. I actually prefer it, because I thought Delgado was too high a price to pay. If you think my rooting interests color the Dempster stuff, you’re wrong.

I don’t have a problem with Beckett because I don’t see what he has done to make the ire he draws reasonable. He isn’t as good a pitcher as he used to be. Well, that sucks, but it doesn’t make him a villain. Everything else that gets cited — beer and chicken, the golf stuff, last night’s exit — seem like either media-created baloney or fan hysteria.

Basically, in Boston, if you’re not that good when you used to be, you get booed.

Did I say you were wrong? My point was to say that you see issues where convenient, as a fan of a certain team but have no problems with a player for Boston who may actually be responsible for some of the dislike that fan base has with him.

I’m not necessarily defending the booing the other night. It’s more just not understanding why you don’t see any reasons why Boston fans might not have a high opinion of this guy. I guess I’m saying that there’s blame on both sides and you just don’t seem to see that.

Hell, Ryan Dempster is an arch criminal for supposedly lying about wanting or not wanting to go to the Braves but Beckett being a general jagoff and playing golf when he was missing a start due to back problems is apparently just fine with Craig. Go figure….

Except his manager said it was no big deal and the team said it was no big deal and his missed start was done out of a precaution anyway and Beckett himself said he could have pitched.

And then a couple weeks later, everyone in Boston jumped on Clay Buchholz for sitting in a chair at a charity event after he got out of the hospital.

And now people are jumping on Beckett for leaving a start with back spasms.

I’m not a Boston fan so this isn’t about being angry at todays Boston baiting by Craig. That’s how Craig “rolls” as he likes to say. I’ve just never understood why Craig never had a problem with Beckett playing golf when he was missing s start due to back issues. I assume that’s the source of the whole “god forbid he bend down to tie his shoes or something” stuff that Craig just wrote. I seem to remember Craig saying that Boston fans were overreacting to that whole thing. I’m just guessing that if an Atlanta starter did the same thing that Craig might have a different opinion on the situation. Yeah, Boston must be a tough place to play as any big city would be but is Beckett really blameless here? I don’t get it.

My comment was more about the fans’ perception of events. Your post would represent the reasonable approach. But my guess is that the fans were booing because he was letting the team down (yet again). If it was a serious injury, maybe it would be forgivable, but something else may be perceived (right or wrong) as a lack of toughness on his part.

Your take on the whole Beckett thing is ludicrous and annoying. This is a Beckett issue that he has brought on himself, not Boston fans with anyone else on that team. Please name the other Red Sox players who have been booed this season at home when they got hurt………….and there have been a lot of opportunities.

This is a guy making nearly 16 million dollars a year who was supposedly hurt earlier in the year and didn’t pitch…………but he played golf and we’re all aware of the other transgressions and issues with him and his personality (or lack thereof). He’s a prick and people are tired of his act.

There was a time when this guy could have run for mayor of Boston and won in a landslide. For him to have become so disliked to the point where he got booed at home for getting injured is completely on him.

Lester was eating chicken, drinking beer and playing video games too…………..he would not get booed at home if he was hurt. Why is that?

Josh Beckett has brought this all on himself and if he just once had been smart enough to appear contrite the fans would have forgiven him. He chose to dig his heels in and got indignant about everything. He feels as though he owes nothing to the fans and this is the one way they can really show him how they feel and I don’t blamed them one bit. He’s a tool and unfortunately the Red Sox are stuck with that soft, out of shape pile of crap for the duration……

10 years ago, if you told a Red Sox fan they’d have a pitcher who’d one year win Game 1 of the ALDS, be the MVP of the ALCS and win Game 1 in the World Series on their way to a 4 game sweep; they’d have said that that guy will always be loved and revered no matter what he ever did afterwards.

Josh Beckett did all of those things and more. And he was a dick the entire time.

Josh Beckett hasn’t changed. His fastball may have changed, but he’s always been a major A-Hole. It’s Boston fans who have changed. Must be too many pink Red Sox caps and too much Sweet Caroline.

Huh? Back spasms are not “nothing wrong.” They go away sometimes, that’s all. It would have been irresponsible and stupid for Beckett to pitch with back spasms.

I have no trouble with Beckett’s work ethics or his guts. I have a problem with the fact that since Sept. 1 of last year, the team has needed him to pitch like the ace he is supposed to be in order to be successful, and he hasn’t done it. Fans shouldn’t boo him, but they have every reason to be disgusted with his performance.
