Teams are permitted to make trades during the off season, and Ellsbury is signed through NEXT season. So, if he were traded this off season, then yes he could bring in a few prospects. No one said that he had to be traded in August.

If he's gone this offseason, how is he going to bring in prospects? You think he's clearing waivers and getting traded in August? Not a chance.

Ellsbury is gone this off season. No chance he signs long term in Boston. Will be interesting to see what kind of prospects he brings back in.

Texas or any other team would jump at the chance to get Ellsbury, that guy when healthy is a game changer, but to have to take Beckett in a deal, well that's where things change, with his contract, and with his clear decline in health (back problems) and performance, the Sox would be lucky if any team would take him.

How so? The trade would have been made if the Sox were completely in sellers mode, and the Rangers have the best farm in baseball. That's pretty much a perfect match.

Texas don't seem to be leaning toward resigning Josh Hamilton this offseason, and the Sox will most likely struggle to resign Ellsbury due to luxury tax issues (and Scott Boras) so why not trade him while people still remember his MVP calibre season?

The only issues I can see with it are that the Rangers' top two prospects are position players (one of which is untouchable, one of which would be blocked by Middlebrooks) and the Sox farm needs pitchers, not sure what the trade package would have looked like.
