In all fairness, can’t a team talk trade, come to an agreement, then leave the table (or phone) with both sides knowing a player has to approve the trade? If the other side decides to leak the detail of the trade before the other can talk to their player, should the player throw a fit and shoot down the trade out of spite? Don’t you think the cubs management apologized to Dempster for the snafu? Don’t you think the Dempster was told by the Cubs management that he was being shopped prior to any of this? Did you read the quote from Dempster a few days before the “trade” with ATL where he said he would be willing to move to any contender? I will simply never side with Dempster on this one.

In all fairness, shouldn’t a player who has been with an organization as long as Dempster, and who has the option to shoot down any trade he doesn’t like, be included in any trade talks? Seems like a miscalculation on the Cubs’ front office, not Dempster’s fault. Why make deals that a player can veto without consulting the player first?

Boy did he overplay his hand on this one… he could have been in Atlanta, playing in a pitchers’ park, in the only league he knows. Instead, he’s playing in a hitters’ park, against teams running out a DH every night. I get why he held out for the Dodgers, but ending up with the Rangers probably isn’t going to help him as he heads toward free egency.
