The team is required to open the locker room where the Players are. Players can easily dress in the trainers room or hang in the players lounge where no press is allowed. Press goes into the locker room 10 minutes after the game. Players can slip out if they really want to.

Players are required to be made available. They can say “no comment” I guess, but are required to be available. Check Paragraph 6 of Attachment 34 of the CBA. It’s cited above.

They are not required to. That said since we fans just can’t call the players and talk to them we need the media to ask the players the questions we can’t. Social media has changed this some but i still believe the media (particularly the media in the locker room and those attending press conferences) are invaluable.

Players who refuse to answer a few post game questions are just asking for more problems IMHO.

Under Attachment 34 to the Collective Bargaining Agreement the clubs are required to make the players available to the media before and after the game. http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/pdf/cba_english.pdf

Yup, because in Milwaukee only livestock attend the games and it was a different Milwaukee Brewers that almost made it to the World Series last year. They were from Milwaukee, New York; not Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Trout is not Arb 1 eligible until 2015, he’ll likely have a long-term deal in place before then. Regardless, staying under $187 million in 2014 will not be that hard as they have about $90 mil to fill out the roster.

As a Brewers fan who appreciate’s Greinke’s sense of humor, I really wish him the best. There has been a lot of talk of how Greinke will avoid big market clubs when it comes time to sign on the line that is dotted (with the feeling being mutual) because he dislikes talking with the media. While I think that is true for the majority of those clubs (look no further than how quickly Red Sox fans and media have turned on Beckett and you can see why Greinke would avoid them like the plague), the ONE “big market” team that I could see Greinke adapting to is Anaheim. They media seems more relaxed, and don’t seem to have the pressure that the Dodgers carry.

Does a Greinke contract even make sense for the Angels? With luxury tax changes, the team needs to look ahead at the impact of all of these long-term contracts they have. The Pujols deal was structured around Torii and Wells rolling off the books after this year and 2014 respectively. Sitting out there in 2015, the team has already committed big dollars to Pujols, Weaver, Wilson, and likely wants to figure out how to keep Morales and Kendrick in-place. And, not to mention, by 2015, they will end up paying Trumbo and Trout quite a bit more as they enter arbitration years if they keep performing. Signing a long-term deal with Greinke like he wants provides the team some stability in the rotation, but closes some doors down the line with regard to other parts of the team. I’m not sure the Angels are willing to make Greinke a major part of their future.

I don’t think pitching in a pennant race in front of 40,000 will be a big deal, as he did that in Milwaukee last year and did just fine.

The big issue is the media before and after a game, as well as hounding his every move. Kansas City and Milwaukee don’t have that kind of media, and from all indications, Milwaukee’s media pretty much respected his privacy for his 1-1/2 years.

It makes sense for both parties to wait. Greinke hasn’t been there long enough to even know if he will be comfortable there, and he will get good money either way. As for the Angels, it doesn’t make sense to even offer an extension until you see a little more of how well Greinke pitches and reacts to the situation. As mentioned, even if it costs them slightly more, they will have the money to sign him later if needed.

It will be interesting to watch Greinke pitching in a high pressure tight pennant race for a big market team in front of 40K fans every night. There has always been talk about his psychological make up so this is the perfect test. If I were the Angels it might cost you a little more $ but I would wait to sign him.
