The Rangers call up Mike Olt

This is surprising: the Rangers have called up top prospect Mike Olt from Double-A.

Olt is one of the game’s top prospects, but he’s definitely green, never having played anywhere more exalted than Frisco. To be fair, however, he is 23. And he was abusing the Texas League, hitting .287/.399/.575 with 27 home runs and 81 RBI through 94 games this season at Frisco.

Olt is a third baseman, but he has played first base and three games in the outfield as well, so you figure the Rangers could use him all over the place.

For some reason they played MY at 3B last night, besides the fact that he can’t field, he can’t hit either (his OBP is currently 2 pts higher than Brendan Ryan’s). If there is room for 426 PAs for Michael Young….they have plenty of opportunity to play Olt.

Young is KILLING my fantasy team but I hate to let him go cause he is available at so many positions!

    Young DFA?

    • paperlions - Aug 2, 2012 at 9:21 AM

That would make for fantastic new coverage, but I don’t think the Rangers have the balls to do it.

When you reference the Rangers are you saying that you don’t think Nolan Ryan and Jon Daniels have the balls to send him packing? Hmmm!

Yes, I am saying that….the narrative around MY is so powerful in the media and among players (who voted him most under rated this year despite the fact that he is probably the worst player in the majors this year), that there would be considerable backlash/shock/awe. He obviously isn’t one of the best 35 players on their 40 man roster, but I still don’t think they’ll just dump him.

It may not be a popular opinion, but I think the TX brass knows Hamilton is gone after this season and they want Olt to get some games under his belt for next season. Best power hitter in their system, so might as well get him started early.

Yeah, I think lmoney is on to something. After Hamilton and Wash’s cryptic signalling yesterday, I do not think it is a coincidence that Olt is up. The Rangers have learned from this series with the Angels that they are in a race. They can’t wait around any longer for Hamilton to sort out whatever demons are confronting him at this moment. And Beltre’s slumping also. So Olt gets playing time. At least for now.

This guy will be a huge bust. Mark Reynolds minus power = Mike Olt
