Isn’t Satan his agent? Or his he just “an advisor”? Borras makes Drew Rosenhaus seem like a candidate for Time Magazine Man of the year. Hope Appel loses this tool before next June, lest Satan hold him out another year, a la JD Drew.

BTW, the mock draft I saw did not show Appel going in the first round. A lot of people may be thinking that way.

Personal opinion? Of course they don’t go for Appel. Way too much risk with the way last draft played out. Besides, they got McCullers, which appears to have ratified their decision.

But I don’t know that I can predict any of that. I looked on line and a 2013 mock draft had them picking a HS outfielder out of California (don’t remember the name).

You are almost certainly right in your assessment. But they are going to have to man up with some really high pitching prospects at some point in the near future.

Those ridiculous tactics that make players more money? Those tactics? The players are still the one’s calling the shots, if the player isn’t willing to take the gamble, then he doesn’t.

…but there isn’t any reason to expect the Astros to use a different approach next year, is there? They don’t need an “old” prospect who will provide immediate (or quick) return, they need to fill a LOT of spots throughout the organization….so the more quality talent they can get with their allotment, the better, right?

The great value of the high picks now seems to be the money that can be saved by “reaching” down a few picks, which can then be used to sign a couple of hard to sign guys. There seems to be no reason to use all of that bonus for the #1 pick unless he is CLEARLY head and shoulders (and maybe pecs) above everyone else…otherwise, take the subequal guy that will take the least money and use the savings on more talent.

The interesting thing is his stock is so high right now.. it most likely will only go down if he has any issues playing this next year before the draft. Even if he has no issues, he could fall into the same predicament that he did this year with teams just not wanting to spend that much on 1 player. I think him not signing has more risk that reward.. if anything he is 1 year back from being in the majors which eventually would pay more than any signing bonus.

I havve no idea if the Astros would bypass Appel again. I’m sure they don’t know yet. But the whole thrust in 2012 was to get a quality choice at #1 and while reserving enough to get McCullers at #41 in the sandwich round. McCullers was also a Boras client, so Scott’s probably not too bent out of shape about the whole thing. And the general assessment at the time was that Appel might have been the top, but that all of the top eight were close in quality.

Now Appel may feel differently about the whole exercise. But I imagine the Astros would still consider him. He has local boy appeal and less leverage this year.
