I relish the times when my team stinks and tickets are easy and cheap. There were several years when the GiGantos stunk and good seats at a great park were easy. Baseball is great then too, not just when the place is full eh.
Damn, some nights at the 'Stick or Oaktown way back when less than 5,000 show are some of the greatest memories ever. Eff, when the Niners were donkey droppings, going to a football game was fun.
A weekday day game at the New Yard in SF with 15-2000 not so many years ago were some good days at the yard for sure. Damn Sam, your team being down is not the end of the world. Much less so than your team being close and not getting it done when tickets are hard, the yard is crowded with fools, and the GM should have been sold off for glue long ago. I know you know Lions, I know you know.

A lot of weight on the 'Doc to hold down the rotation, and Lee if the Fodgers don't pony up. I think they will pony up in a large cash freeing way. Duck them all into the 22nd century, and all their ducking cousins too. The Nats due to regress, or progress? Maybe it is a rebuild along with having the old guard, glory, on hand to sell some seats. The last of Ut and a long spell of Howard. Reminds me of McCovey's last round with the GiGantos, not all bad really, not really the same caliber, but you know what I mean. Yes, Howard wears a ring that Willie Mac never will, so there is that. I do think it will be a down time, but it doesn't have to be a broke $$ time and decade walk in the wilderness like the last time the Phils fell off a cliff. I do think they can take a shorter fall and walk back, maybe Howard is still there when the next crew arrives. Winning won't be a completely forgotten concept by then, yet.
I will enjoy the Phils being down for a spell though. Sorry about that, NOT. Ushering the Doc and Lee out in 2010 is a highlight of life that just doesn't come often, or ever dim. You all will remember this time, not for only winning one, but for building a beast that was feared. You all will be feared again, in time.

Lions, sorry for all the words,,,,,
My gut does not like the Pence trade, really don't think he gets it done for us. I hope I am wrong. Why should I like him, aside from the clearly alien presence he gives us? What will bum me out about him, aside from the bug eyed alien factor?
Jesus, sign him long term or pay arb price,, just like Sabes, effing idiot
Enjoy Nate, he might blossom for you all given a steady shot, like the last two months of a lost season. He may show he is worth a bit more than the cheap player he will be next year.Nate, the Great, will be missed in this corner of the world for sure.

That's true, they really did walk out onto thin ice, with no idea how thin it was, or how deep the water was....I don't think they'll be competitive any time soon no matter how much payroll they shed. If Lee leaves, fine...but who replaces him? They shed money with Victorino and Blanton and Pence...but again, those were still the best guys they had to play those roles....who is available to replace them? Their system is among the worst in the majors, not a lot on the FA market, and most of it will be old, expensive, or both.

Do you have to fall off the cliff, or, is there a stair case or an elevator option to the fall and provides a way back up?
Can they find a blend of money and age, vets, youth, and enough pitching that makes, or keeps, them competitive sooner than a full rebuild while still paying for past glory?

How far is the fall?
I respect the chance they took for sure, but did they really assess the risk? From my own passion, I liked the Beltran trade enough, but not so much letting Wheeler go,, but it seemed worth the shot at more glory.
Where is the rope, something to hold on to here? Or, do we have to step into the abyss? More and more, it looks like the abyss for the Phightins. Not going to be sad about it.
If the Fodgers take on all that money, good for the Phils, and damn the Fodgers all to hell. Hope the enjoy chewing on it, and, well, damn me, they will probably love chewing on it and some more chunks of change along the way. The Fodgers will be soon landing, or crafting, the largest TV deal this planet has ever seen. My nightmares come true.
As far as beating Mr. Lee, not worried really. I do hope whoever is paying him regrets it all the way to the bank.
retooling? reloading? or just paring down the payroll? the future is less murky now than it was,,
I love the phrase for all the vitriol it spawned that seems to have, largely, disappeared and how true it was/is.
Maybe the Phils can go with a blend of cheap and vet and still compete well enough to get to the crap shoot that has become the post season.

Big Joe served his purpose with the Phillies as a 4th or 5th starter and came thru in 08, especially with that nasty homerun. The Phillies will be back in 2013 and put the Nats back in the basement. They are first in the East for the first time in over 5 years and suddenly they have "passionate" fans, incredible. That's no offense to the true Nat fans that liked them when they sucked, the few fans that there actually was. We will be back on top next year. They're not rebuilding, retooling what they have. They have to for there TV contract in 2 more years.
