If Youk were to stay that would be an expensive infield. Especially for the habitually cheap southsiders.

Beckham is up for Arbitration.
Adam Dunn’s is due $15 million
Paulie Konerko is due $13.5 million
Alexei Ramirez is due $7 million (with almost $20 million due over the next two years.
A.J. Pierzynski is a free agent and after the year he’s having, he’s going to command a nice contract.

Not to mention Rios’ contract in the outfield as well as Danks, and Peavy.

He’s a great addition but I hope we can find someone younger and cheaper in free agency.

liamj55, well said. I just made a similar comment to a Nats fan above. I just said the same thing you just did. Let’s see the Nats core do better during their run and then the Nats fans can get as loud as they want. Until then they haven’t even won a division yet and it’s no sure thing. If they don’t get the division , just getting into the playoffs is no sure thing. There will be a lot of good teams going for those wildcard spots. Ohh..and as you said, Nats fans may have misunderstood, but when your dink GM created the lame “take back the park” promo this year, he meant that the fans should actually show up all year. Not sure if the Nats fans understand that.

kkolchak, about 7 or 8 years ago the Phillies brought up several good players that formed a World series core. You know how they did that? By losing and losing and losing and getting good draft picks. That’s usually how it’s done and that’s what the Nats have now. It really doesn’t make your team special that they have several good young prospects. It’s a result of losing , losing, and losing some more. Harper and Strasburg are #1 picks. Those picks resulted from absolute losing. Let’s see what your management does in the long run. Maybe they will do well, maybe not. If the Nats do better than a championship, a pennant, 5 divisions in a row, get back to us Phillies fans. Until then try and win a division first.

Wow a lot of Nats fans pumping their chests out like they won a world series or 5 straight divisions. How about you loyal Nats fans start showing up to your own park???? The Phils should sign him for a year or two. That is how long their window is open so it makes complete sense to epically with the options out there. Again it comes down to length and cost.

He would be a perfect fit for the Phillies on a reasonable, short-term deal. The Phillies desperately need a 3rd Baseman, and there just aren’t many good options out there. They have a decent prospect who is a few years away at AA, so if they can get a guy like Youk for a year or two, they should do it. It’s not like there are many better options out there.

Would look genius right now if the Reds had gotten Youk, with Votto being out. Rolen and Frazier have been fantastic, but the way Youk is swinging the bat lately would have put them WAY over the top along with Broxton for the postseason. Oh well, coulda shoulda woulda.

Meanwhile, the Nats will just keep calling up their good young players as they have been for three seasons now.

Wouldnt make sense for the reds either, at least I don’t want him, he too is oft injury prone just like rolen and it blocks Todd Frazier again from everyday playing time. Maybe a one year rental, but def nothing longer than that

No no no no!! As a Phillies fan there is no way I wanna see Youk in Red pinstripes. Hes old, been injury probe, and in a very steep decline for at least two years now. They need to get younger not older. As much as I’d hate to trade Cliff Lee again it may be a must do. This formula of loading up on $20MM starting pitchers isnt working. Trade Lee to Arizona for Upton, or Boston for Ellsbury, or Texas for Olt or Jurickson n another prospect or two. Youk is definatly NOT the answer!!

Hard to tell what his market value is right now.. at the end of the day, some team will probably over pay for him, he won’t put up special numbers, and a team will have a bad contract on their hands. It seems like with anyone his age, this always happens.
