Roy Oswalt is staying in the bullpen

Aug 6, 2012, 5:32 PM EDT

Roy Oswalt

This morning we talked about Roy Oswalt’s displeasure with being a reliever. This afternoon the Rangers basically said “tough.”  T.R. Sullivan reports:

Assistant general manager Thad Levine said the club has talked to Oswalt about his desire to start but made it clear to him that he will be used out of the bullpen. Levine declined to say if Oswalt has asked to be traded.

I presume that one of two things happens now: Oswalt shuts up and takes the ball when Ron Washington gives it to him or else he gets DFA’d.  The Rangers are in a pennant race. They don’t have time to deal with this kind of garbage.

  1. willclarkgameface - Aug 6, 2012 at 5:46 PM

    Fuck ’em.

He’s a selfish prick and should be released. He ain’t shit. He ain’t a winner. He ain’t a good teammate. He’s a dick.

Send him back to the farm and tell him to shut the fuck up and whine to his wife about the chores she wants him to do, not Ron Washington, a mother fucking PRO and good guy.

    • proudlycanadian - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:04 PM

No need for the obscenity. Is your vocabulary so poor that you can’t make a point without demeaning yourself? Craig. I am asking that this person be banned.

      • willclarkgameface - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:21 PM

Is this for real? I’m not attacking members of the board. I’m talking passionately about baseball. This is how I talk.

      • proudlycanadian - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:25 PM

This is for real. You went too far.

      • hermitfool - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:55 PM

No need for the potty mouth, dude.

      • machosasquatcho - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:24 PM

Uhh, wow. Whether or not you swear personally and whether or not you like swearing or don’t, the fact that you’d whine for Craig to ban willclarkgameface because he said “fuck” is absurd. Language-policing when someone hasn’t personally attacked another user sets a disturbing precedent.

Oh, and relying on the old “your vocabulary sucks because you swear” argument is just sad. Some people say words like “fuck” and “shit” and “nutsack.” Deal with it.

      • proudlycanadian - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:31 PM

A juvenile response. This is not the forum for obscenity.

      • machosasquatcho - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:40 PM

“Obscenity” is subjective, being derived from morality, which is also subjective. What willclarkgameface said was not by any means obscene to me, but you act as though your morality is more important than mine, or willclarkgameface’s.

Craig made this Oswalt post, and it stands to reason that he’ll read the comments at some point. If he finds willclarkgameface’s comments ban-worthy, he’ll ban him; if he’s not bothered, he won’t. No amount of your smug hand-waving and moaning will change that.

Instead of advocating the censorship of people who express themselves differently from you, try tolerating them.

      • Craig Calcaterra - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:43 PM

I don’t ban people for obscenity alone. I wish they wouldn’t use it all that much, but I often do myself (and wish I didn’t), and I’m not gonna go nuts on someone for it.

I bad for misogyny, racism, homophobia, and the like. I ban for excessive attacks that go beyond the realm of merely strong argument. I reserve the right to ban people who are obnoxious in other ways.

So, I don’t necessarily care for willclark’s language, but I’m not gonna ban him for it. If he makes a jackwagon of himself and uses this cautious permission as an excuse to otherwise mess up the board with too much of it, then I may change my mind.

      • proudlycanadian - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:50 PM

OK; however I find it obnoxious and still think that it is totally unnecessary and juvenile. There are other and better ways to make a point. The English language gives a poster a variety of more interesting options to make a point.

      • marzalmighty - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:50 PM

To proudlycanadian… You are RIDICULOUS. I find it hard to be that you can, with a straight face, say that you are offended by someone’s language in an open online forum that YOU CHOSE to view. I bet you are the kid at the playground that none of the other kids picked to play on their team.

        Another opinion…

I’m going to hold out hope that Oswalt will work out well for the Rangers. With the way Holland is currently pitching, it might not be long before Roy is back in the rotation. Also, he looked awfully jovial coming out of the dugout with his teammates before tonight’s game started.

      • proudlycanadian - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:52 PM

        How little you know grashopper.

      • baseballisboring - Aug 6, 2012 at 8:09 PM

Oh boo hoo. There’s curses in the world, you’ve heard worse. If it bothers you that much you’re a hyper-sensitive child.

      • baseballisboring - Aug 6, 2012 at 8:10 PM

From now on whenever anyone says a curse word on this site, make sure you preface it with *earmuffs!* so no one ever has to read a word that would make them feel uncomfortable for .23 seconds.

      • marzalmighty - Aug 6, 2012 at 8:13 PM

How little I know or how little I know about you? I don’t care to know any more about you than I already do. What I do know is that you are overly sensitive to what you deem offensive language and that you think other people should adhere to your standards of language. Should they not, they should be banned from equally enjoying this informative website because you shouldn’t be burdened with overlooking what you do not like. Am I to assume that anyone with a differing opinion than you is also ban worthy? Your arrogance becomes you.

      • proudlycanadian - Aug 6, 2012 at 8:31 PM

Congratulations! You have made your argument using proper English and without obscenities.

      • highump - Aug 7, 2012 at 8:43 PM

My goodness if you are so offended by obscenity, how can you be interested in a sport that includes many of these “obscenities” in EVERY game?

    • bcopus - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:47 PM

Now tell us how you really feel.

      • stex52 - Aug 6, 2012 at 10:32 PM

Proudly, I can concur that points can be made with a lot more coherence and a lot less foul language. But we’re not going to melt from it. This site can get kind of free-wheeling, but sometimes that is the appeal, too. I don’t think it’s a big deal to give a bit on this one.

Besides, if the Astros keep playing the way they are, I may cut loose with a few choice ones before long.

    • machosasquatcho - Aug 6, 2012 at 8:58 PM

It’s funny that you don’t really have an argument to support the notion that your view of obscenity is the only one that matters. Instead of providing reasons to back up this assertion, you’re content making condescending comments about “proper” English.

You’re not saying anything of substance and several people here have recognized that and called you out on it. You’re trying so hard to be this board’s morality police and failing so hard. I’m sure you’d love to control what people say and think, but you can’t, so step off your high horse and stand in the shit with your fellow man.

Or, you know, complain to Craig that you will not tolerate these opposing viewpoints and try to get me banned. Whichever’s easier.

  2. brewcrewfan54 - Aug 6, 2012 at 5:47 PM

Its funny when guys who suck think the team cares what they want to do. Be happy they haven’t dumped you yet.

  3. elgorditodehumboldt - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:04 PM

    Stay classy, Roy Oswalt

  4. randygnyc - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:09 PM

I’m shocked at Roy’s behavior. The Rangers let him take 1/2 the year off before signing him. Paid him like a mercenary. Gave him a chance to prove himself and in the end, is giving him a chance to get a ring. To then tell Washington he didn’t want to continue in a game? He’s quit on his team. He should be cut. No other team should sign him. Essentially, he should be blackballed.

    • stex52 - Aug 6, 2012 at 10:36 PM

Randy, I’m surprised, too. Not what I thought of Oswalt for years. I will grant the argument that he is not used to this relief stuff and he has thrown a fair number of pitches in the last two days. But the old Oswalt was game enough for anything. I get the impression that the Rangers bought into a guy who really doesn’t want to pitch that much anymore.

  5. thatyankeedude - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:10 PM

Ya he might still b in the pen but will he actually b willing to pitch??

  6. gunpowderjones - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:15 PM

Proudlycanadian is insulting other commenters. I ask that he be banned.

  7. cmbrown15 - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:22 PM

Roy Oswalt is delusional. He’s been shelled as a starter this season. If Roy wanted to start, Roy needed to produce.

Compare this pouting to Alexi Ogando and Neftali Feliz — pitchers that know their roles, don’t complain and take the ball when asked. Feliz blew out his elbow for the Rangers while Roy Oswalt rested, wavered and negotiated to play half a season for ten times the salary.

    Cut him.

  8. sgtr0c - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:27 PM

When he was in Philly, he said that in his life, it was god first, family second, bulldozer third, hop-scotch fourth, and the pro-baseball was like fifth, sixth, or something like that…..

  9. phillyphan93 - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:31 PM

    Blame Canada, South Park
I think this song sums up Canadians and profanity.

    • proudlycanadian - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:47 PM

Not as funny as the 2012 Phillies. Better luck next year.

    • umrguy42 - Aug 7, 2012 at 9:15 AM

Did you never listen to the last lines?

The laughter and fun must all be undone
We must blame them and cause a fuss
Before somebody thinks of blaming us!

  10. paul621 - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:36 PM

I really don’t get why everyone is jumping on him. We don’t know why he didn’t go back out there last night, but I’d rather he be honest if he doesn’t have it than try anyway and suck up the joint. Why assume he was being lazy or a bad teammate when maybe he was just being honest about his arm?

    • willclarkgameface - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:54 PM

Pitch through a dead arm. Don’t sit on it. How dead could his arm be? He had how long to get ready for the season? Come on.

He walks into Texas like he’s the next Roger Clemens on the half season plan and WHACK, he sucks.

Didn’t we expect this? He was made for the NL, not the AL. Between him and Dempster, they are gonna regret getting sent to Texas by the end of this month.

      • natslady - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:57 PM

My agree was for paul621, not for this willclark&& clown. Just want to make clear with whom I agree.

    • natslady - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:55 PM

Agree, agree, agree. I am disillusioned with this site, except for the commenters. The authors go for superficial headline grabs and snide remarks over insight. Someone posted on the previous Oswalt entry that he had pitched something like 150 innings over the last 7 days. Relievers’ innings tend to be quite stressful, and Oswalt has not been accustomed to the bullpen and that way of life. Really, being a “team player” means going out for the third inning in a tie game when your arm or shoulder is about to fall off–and giving up a bunch of runs? I would rather Oswalt is honest and I assume he is until proven otherwise. If he can’t go, you don’t want him to go.

I get that Craig & co. have to cover thirty teams and every trade, waiver pickup, and assorted gossip. But how about one post per day with injuries and one per day with minor transactions (e.g., the Nats pick up Izturis as a backup infielder)–like the And-That-Happened for game results. Then maybe one post or two for gossip. The commenters who are actual fans of the teams give you better information than the professional journalists??? Something is amiss here.

  11. keithbangedyermom - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:53 PM

    Dear Roy Oswalt,

    Eat shit.

    baseball fans

  12. natslady - Aug 6, 2012 at 6:59 PM

Can’t be right though, 150 innings over 7 days? What is the real story, is there any way of knowing?

  13. randygnyc - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:14 PM

And most succesful starters are will throw between 100 and 110 pitches every 5 days. Essentially throwing 225 innings in 5 days (a start every 5 th day). Roy was a starter and could easily handle 150 innings in 5 days.

    • natslady - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:28 PM

pitches, not innings. 225 innings would be a season’s worth! However, 150 pitches for a starter is WAY different than 150 pitches for a reliever. That’s why relievers (in general) don’t last as long as starters for their careers. The innings are stressful and there is less rest and recovery between appearances.

  14. randygnyc - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:32 PM

Sorry, meant pitches, not innings, of course.

  15. randygnyc - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:39 PM

Roy threw 96 pitches as a starter on July 30th. Threw 24 in relief a few days later, which would have been the equivalent of a very light throw day. Then, he threw 30 last night. Had it been a start, Roy would have thrown 100 pitches. Seems like a VERY LIGHT workload.

    • natslady - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:48 PM

Without looking at it more closely, I don’t know if Oswalt has a case or not. What I question is the automatic assumption that he doesn’t.

      • highump - Aug 7, 2012 at 8:52 PM

The point is he is overpaid to play a game. He needs to be a team player and do what the *bleeping* coach says, or quit and give the money back. This is equivalent to a football player saying the coach is working him too hard in practice.

  16. natslady - Aug 6, 2012 at 7:43 PM

Basically, when a starter runs into trouble or is tired (or it’s raining) he’s removed from the game and gets another five days’ of rest. That applies whether he pitched a complete game or was shelled and came out after 3 or 4 innings. Relievers, on the other hand, may only throw 20 or 30 pitches, but, good or bad outing, doesn’t matter, they are expected to pitch again within a day or two at most. Starters can have a gameplan, and pretty much stick to it. Relievers, if they are lucky, MIGHT know which guys in the line-up are likely to fall to them–but not always. In one game over the weekend Davey inserted a reliever TWICE in the middle of an at-bat. Can you imagine a starter dealing with that? Different mental and physical grind.

  17. schmedley69 - Aug 6, 2012 at 8:12 PM

He probably wouldn’t mind relieving if they allowed him to drive out to the mound on a tractor.

  18. bshook87 - Aug 6, 2012 at 8:22 PM

Shut up and pitch, Roy. You have a chance to play for a winning team, make 5 million dollars and possibly win a ring as a washed-up has been. Every old pitcher in the game would kill to be in your spot.

  19. kappy32 - Aug 6, 2012 at 10:20 PM

Garbage is the perfect word for it. He needs to just shut up or go play on a team out of the pennant chase. Oswalt is a diva & doesn’t deserve to be one. He pulled a Clemens-like mid-season arrival, but the big issue I have with that is that he couldn’t be a pimple on Clemens’ a$$ when it comes to pitching. He was good when he was in his prime, but he has ZERO Cy Young Awards, ZERO World Series Rings & only 3 All-Star selections. He has never been good enough to justify acting like this. I’d DFA him & tell him to have fun.

  20. kappy32 - Aug 6, 2012 at 10:27 PM

Grow up, dude. I’m semi-sure you’re an adult & if you are offended by some guy who you never met, never will & has absolutely no bearing or affect on your life, you have more problems than some idiot that feels the need to draw attention to himself by cursing & looking like an uneducated fool. By you acknowledging his stupid comment, younger giving him exactly what he wants: ATTENTION. Go into your bedroom, take off your skirt, put some big boy pants on, and grow a pair.

  21. kappy32 - Aug 6, 2012 at 10:36 PM

OMG!!!! Craig… You absolutely MUST ban ProudlyCanadian. How dare he call someone a “grashopper” (even though I think he meant “grasshopper”). It is unconscionable to call someone such a name & I am beyond offended.

Hey, jackass, if you’re going to call out other people on their “proper grammar” you should first check your own grammar & spelling. Not only do you come off like an oversensitive box by complaining about cursing, but you look like an idiot for misspelling an easy word like “grasshopper” then calling out someone else’s grammar. I think blogs like (ID Discovery) are looking for new members; you’d fit in perfectly with all those menopausal housewives over there. You know the saying… This who live in a glass house shouldn’t…

  22. thatyankeedude - Aug 6, 2012 at 11:04 PM

As far as the profanity goes I’m not promoting it but we have all seen or heard those words before so let’s just get over it and start bashing Roy Oswalt

  23. gsrider911 - Aug 8, 2012 at 11:53 AM

I couldn’t make sense out of the Rangers signing Oswalt. He couldn’t handle the NL last year – what makes them think he can handle the AL, Arlington or the Angels & Yankees?

With that being said, I’m glad they signed Dempster, a class act who will do them a lot more good than Oswalt.

As fans, we’re being set up to presume that Oswalt is a total douche, and reading the article on initially had be believing this fact (and any current or former Philly player MUST be, right??) but this could all be smoke and mirrors and media hype.

The power rests with Washington and the coaches and they will do what is best for the Rangers; does he have a spot in their rotation, bullpen or family? If you asked me and if I was the GM and making these decisions – I would DFA him. Perhaps the Rangers know something we don’t know about Oswalts capabilities to get outs against the perennial NL contenders (since the Rangers pitching has melted down in the WS for 2 years in a row) and they are going to keep him for a rainy day…

    hasa diga eebowai!!!!!!!!
