The Nats acquire Cesar Izturis from the Brewers

Aug 6, 2012, 3:00 PM EDT

While every other contender in the National League made a move or two, the Nats didn’t do much of anything at the trade deadline. That changed today:

OK, maybe it wasn’t exactly a game-changer, as Izturis can’t hit a lick (he’s at .235/.248/.333 this season). But if you don’t play someone in the infield you tend to allow a lot more singles, so there’s that.

The real news of this deal, actually, is the Brewers losing Izturis, thereby allowing Jean Segura — the infield prospect they got from the Angels in the Zack Greinke deal — get some big league PT.

…more evidence that Strasburg pitches into the playoffs…

Hold on Teddy, help is on the way!

Stop that. Repeat after me, Strasburg will be shut down, the only question is if it’ early Sept or mid-Sept. It already in process, Rizzo has said the seasy decision would be to run Strasburg out there ever day and see what happens. By the smart thing for Nationals and Strasburg himself is to shut him down around 170 innings. It done and will happen.

Count the minutes after he hits 162 (so he is eligible for any awards that may come his way.) Count the minutes.

        Spellcheck much?

Plus, Rizzo already 180, not 160.

Remember that the Nats also traded for a starting catcher after the deadline too.

Exactly. Smart guy, doesn ‘t get caught up in the frenzy and bidding wars.

Not saying Rizzo’s perfect though, T. Really, I’m not saying that…

Espinosa took a fall at 2B and was a little slow getting up. Scared the bejesus out of everyone. We are on the backups of the backups in the infield and catcher positions.

I just hope this doesn’t mean that they expect Desmond back later rather than sooner.

With you there. Need Desi’s offense and “leadership,” seriously. The captain of the infield, you saw how much he was missed when Gio got flustered, let the pitcher get a hit and the inning got away from him. Of course, Suzuki will help Gio with that, but Desi is the best.

Everything is point to Desi returning around September 1st.
