BTW - this isn't exactly a "new" rivalry. Old school Reds and Pirates fans will remember that we've had a competitive history over the years - just not recently. Hell, just in my lifetime we beat Pittsburgh for the NL pennant in 1970, 1972, 1975, and 1990. The Pirates knocked us out of the 1979 playoffs. I like that this rivalry seems to have a new life.

From the Reds' website:

"Whether it was built-up frustration or an attempt at payback, the Pirates took things a step further in the eighth inning of the Reds' 5-4 win Saturday after reliever Jared Hughes surrendered what proved to be the game-winning run.

Catcher Dioner Navarro chopped a grounder toward first base. Hughes had a routine tag out but added a little extra shove on Navarro to end the play, answered by a swarm of boos from the Cincinnati crowd."

"Then Pittsburgh pitcher Jared Hughes used extra-curricular activity to tag out Reds catcher Dioner Navarro, giving him a hefty shove after making the tag."

I could see the Pirates getting upset about Chapman hitting your best player in that situation. Truth is a 101 MPH thump to the arm in that situation is a Reds win/win. 2 outs, bottom of the ninth and a closer that is untouchable? Why not get the .373 hitter a little banged up and off his game for the next two days? Also the strategy is sound because it worked (see NL Central standings). But the breaking ball that didn't break from Leak the next day was an over the top reaction by the Pirates. If the Bucks do this much crying over this, I can't wait to see what they do when the Cards get it together and steal their wild card spot.

The umpire crew in the series was horrendous. Specifically the elder grey haired, behind the plate sat and at third on sun. I understand the home field advantage - but the strike zone was inconsistent on both sides. Also, if the Pirates did retaliated it was an ejection for sure. Not asking for replay or special privileges, just a series that isn't dictated by umpires

did I miss the part where they passed a rule that all pitchers must have pin point control at all times?when you hit a batter intentionaly it is called a purpose pitch, now please tell me how hitting those guys in those situations serves a purpose?2 outs in 9th and hitting a guy who had done nothing against the reds this series proves what? Leake hitting somebody with 2 outs and 1 run lead and putting the go ahead run at the plate serves what purpose? and Bailey was all over the place yesterday so hitting someone had nothing to do with doing it on purpose. there is old school and there is being a wuss which the pirates are being. it's great you are having a winning season but because your guys get hit does not mean anything other than they had control problems. stop acting like you guys are the top dog because you do not suck as bad as you have the last 20 years. you had a 2 game lead on the reds at the break and are now 4.5 games back. the Reds just took 2 out of 3 games from you so that means you do not get to talk about revenge and how tough you are. you have now stated you intend payback when you play again so you will not get the benefit of the doubt even if your guy says it was not on purpose.

Cardinal fans may be insufferable, but if we are ranking MLB fans from most insufferable to least insufferable (but still insufferable), Cardinal fans would come in near the bottom on the insufferability scale...you don't generally see Cardinal fans using "we", calling opposing players names or attempting to belittle opposing players/fans, spouting vitriol, thumping chests about wins that haven't happened yet, or even thumping chests about wins that did happen....about all you can complain about with respect to Cardinal fans is that they are too comfortable being referred to as "the best fans in baseball".

Arrogant Pirate fans the Reds just took 2 of 3 away from your great team with mostly backups playing. You fools go 1-2 in a series and lose a game in the standings and your talking crap like you swept Cincy. Burnett is as hot a pitcher as the reds are a team right now do I don't mind losing that game, THE REDS STILL WON THE SERIES! Get that through your thick skulls. Also cry all you want about your players getting HBP it's a part of the game and the Pirates are crying about it instead of doing something about it. Pirates are not ready to be a playoff team yet because they can be intimidated by opposing teams, the Reds learned a great lesson from the Cards and Phillies in 2010 about intimidation. Now the Reds are the ones intimidating teams I like it.

It's not as much the Reds as it is Dusty Baker. He seems like he just has to start shit with someone every year.

Other than Queto (whose a complete POS) I don't have a problem with any of them.

Brandon Phillips talks a lot of trash, but he backs it up too. Their fans are a different story though. Definitely a little man complex at work there..

Okay, so I'll address you concerns as you raise them in your second comment:

- "No one said anything about the Reds getting comfortable in first." While you didn't say that directly, your statement to "get used to second place" implies that you think that the Reds intend to stay in first place. A logical leap I feel.

-"You just acted like your bucs came out of Cincy with a sweep with the 'bitch' comment." No I didn't. I'm not the one who made the original comment. In fact I noted that the language was crass.

-"He can only pitch one and one game out of three is a losing series every time. Again get used to second place." This is also technically correct, and also a point I'm not arguing. What I continue to point out is that the Reds have continued to struggle against Burnett. I would caution you, however, that while you have had success against the Pirates outside of Burnett's games, past performance is not always an accurate indicator of future results (hence my allusion to last year's teams).

-"Also remember, we were almost playing our B squad against Burnett Sunday." True the Reds didn't have two of there better offensive weapons, however he can only beat the team that is in front of him. In addition, in his two starts against your "A-Squad" earlier this year with Votto and Phillips, Burnett has pitched a combined 12 innings and only given up 3 ER, for a 2-0 record and an ERA of 2.25. Still pretty solid.

Bengalsucker thinks that winning 20 out of 23 is sustainable. They are on a crazy hot streak right now with great hitting when the pitching struggles, great pitching when the bats go cold, and some good old fashioned good luck. I didn't think that the Pirates were going to hit .300 plus as a team and score 8 runs a game during their run in june/ july. the lead isn't too far gone because there are over 50 games left to play. Only get better? at least 2 of your starting pitchers can implode at any moment. As for Dusty being a koch sucker and hitting Harrison before a Red could be plunk, I hope Cueto gets plunked right in between the numbers in the next series

Doesn't matter who finishes 1st or 2nd or even 3rd because of the two wild cards. They'll make the playoffs if they continue playing well.

Pirates are going to be around in October so I hope the Reds continue to show their true color because I think this Pirates group is hungry.

Btw the Reds are completely classless and has a team full of punks.

Cub fans are easily the most annoying of the NL Central fans, but you seem bound and determined to give them a run for their money.

Last year Rickie Weeks came back from injury late in the year and he struggled the remainder of the year and 75% of this season. Getting guys back from injury isn't always a guarantee.

No one said anything about the Reds getting comfortable in first. They are going to continue to play strong. You just acted like your bucs came out of Cincy with a sweep with the "bitch" comment. Burnett can't pitch every game against us.
