Indians release Johnny Damon

Aug 9, 2012, 5:47 PM EDT

Johnny Damon AP

Johnny Damon cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week and the Indians released the 38-year-old outfielder/designated hitter.

He hit .222 with four homers and a .610 OPS in 64 games after joining the Indians in early May, earning $1.25 million in guaranteed money as part of a minor-league deal.

Considering the lack of interest in Damon as a free agent during the offseason this may be the end of the line for the two-time All-Star with 2,769 career hits unless he feels like spending extended time in Triple-A to prove there’s still some gas left in the tank.

He would fit perfectly in the Mets outflield. His numbers are basically the same as the present collection they have now. In fact i would rather see him in left field over “Flushing Bay”.

Nice guy, but he doesn’t have enough pop anymore to DH in the AL, and he isnt a good enough fielder to play everyday in the NL. I could see the Mets signing him as some sort of a platoon/off the bench bat, but Johnny’s days of playing every day are over

Enjoyed Johnny’s days in Detroit. Class act. Being a white guy, likely saved enough to retire on, too.

dimwitted scumbag? i felt the first mets comment was a joke and as a tiger fan i thought it was a decent sign then even tho i knew his years were numbered. oh yeah, i even lost some respect for the guy when he shaved the beard and cut his hair to play with the yankess, basically old gator….i do not know what you are talking about

Has enough to retire because he’s white? I’d call you the names you deserve to be called, but your idiocy speaks volumes already…

Loser guarantee you will never have enough to retire

  9. dawgpoundmember - Aug 10, 2012 at 12:18 AM

Ohhhhh, sorry, I had a few beers since I had nothing else to do tonight, carry on.

Oddly enough, it was made public at the time Damon was playing with the Yankees, he was broke. Even after making something like $50 million in his career up to that point. Skin color doesn’t factor in to wealth accumulation. Equal amounts of intelligence and luck do, though.
