He averages just under 6 K’s per 9, and a hair over 3 walks per 9. He’s averaging 6 1/2 innings per start.

Freddy Garcia (a “real” teams 5th in rotation) averages 6.5 K’s per 9, 2 2/3 walks per 9, 6 1/2 innings per start.

Worse than Freddy? Yup. But not that far off considering he’s only had 8 starts in the bigs. Again, to say he’s one of the worst in the bigs is foolish. I can easily name about 10 worse pitchers right now, starting with Guthrie.

It’s amazing how many commenters seemingly want to be the first person to call this kid a bust. The O’s are suprisingly still in the race. They pulled up their best position prospect after 400 AB in AA, to help cover a position of need down the stretch. The move may have been unexpected, but it’s not lunacy. Let it play out instead of declaring him savior/bust. It’s baseball folks, enjoy the ride.

None of his minor league (or major league) numbers suggest he’s good. He doesn’t strike out anyone (missing bats is important), his walk rate is mediocre, and his ground ball rate is low. He profiles as a 6th/7th starter.

I can dig it. This was simply my way of saying all of the fools who declared this move (Mach to the bigs from AA) a huge mistake and stupid of the O’s and said this would slow his development, were simply overexagerating a worst possible scenario. Instead, Mach comes up, goes 2-4, looks comfortable at third and there’s no reason to fret. BUT trust me, I’ve seen Felix Pie, Jay Gibbons, Larry Bigbie… all guys we thought would pan out to be great then tanked. Or messed with HGH.

I can’t remember which manager it was that they quoted during the game about Will Smith (the pitcher) but it was something to the effect of “great movement, great secondary pitches, and a guy who can definitely keep his team in the game.” This was an opposing team’s manager. Smith has gone 3-1 in his last 4 starts. His ERA away from home is 3 and change. He’s no Grienke, but he’s surely better than some triple A arm who wouldn’t start for any “real” team. How you can possibly call him one of the worst in the bigs is absolutely beyond me and sounds petty to be honest.

I actually called it a “preemptive” told you so, in sense that it’s clearly too early to say I was right or wrong. In no way did I mean he’s HOF bound and after one game earned a starting spot. But take it however you want…

He was also facing a AAA pitcher, who wouldn’t be starting for any “real” MLB team. You may be right, he may be a star the rest of the year….but hitting only 1 ball hard while facing one of the worst starting pitchers in the majors isn’t really indicative of anything.

He hit one ball out of the IF. It is nice that he didn’t K. But c’mon. If he continues to hit 1 ball out of the IF/game (and it was the only one he hit hard), you won’t be happy with the results.

At least they are planning to play the kid everyday, which is smart. Still not gonna matter to their playoff hopes.

You can be excited about one game but the point still stands you shouldn’t be dishing out I told you so’s after one game. Hanley Ramirez had a great start in his trade to LAD, and the people who thought it was a good trade did the I told you so’s too. And then Hanley hit 226/328/358 for the Dodgers…

So the point is, great for Machado, but it doesn’t mean you were right or they were wrong. That’s something we won’t know till the end of September.

In all seriousness, even one year isn’t enough time to determine a players ability. Just ask the many Phillies fans who, just last year, were touting John Mayberry Jr as their next great outfielder.

Who said anything about Cooperstown, the kid had a good game. Great for him, dislike the Orioles, or any team whatever, but can’t you be a little happy for a 20 year old kid having a great MLB debut, talented young prospects are good for the game as a whole that is rapidly fading to the NFL.

I believe the phrase was ‘idotic’ and ‘retard his development’ and ‘no experience at third.’?

His first career hit was a triple, added an infield single, played well at third… Saw no signs of not being ready for the bigs. Nobody said anything about HOF worthy. Let’s see if it keeps him in the lineup.
