If all other stats are relatively equal and one guy has 4 or 5 more wins then the other, that makes it a very relevant stat.

you get the point. Not having a UCL doesn’t exempt him from severe injury due to overuse.

I’m a Nats fan, and right now I think Jordan Zimmermann is the the best candidate on the Nats.

That said, I’ll concede that Dickey has had an awesome year and if he gets the award it won’t bother me, especially given where the two teams are in the standings.

20 wins is still a milestone, especially for elite pitchers. Same as hitting 40 home runs or 100 rbi’s, 200 hits, .300 avg.

Impossible. Dickey does not have a UCL to tear. Its the whole reason he is a knuckleballer. How do you not know his story? Everyone knows it.

At first glance i think it is a bad idea to pitch him on short rest just for individual awards. But then if the season is over for them what else is there for them and their fans but individual awards? Baseball is a team sport but it is one that has a large ammount of individual awards. Knowing that the reigning cy young winner is a met, should that come to be, has off the field implications that could help the mets in the future. So why not let him make an extra start here or there to lower his peripherals and gain him some more attention in the media. Whether or not he does start on short rest his manager just got him extra attention while at same time making sure he got mentioned in a conversation about cy young award implications. Well done.

I will laugh very hard if Collins does this and Dickey needs TJS by the end of the year. Not to wish ill will on Dickey, he’s awesome and I have mad respect for the guy. Just cuz it’s the Mets, and I can totally see that happening with the way their season has gone.

It’s a wide-open Cy race in the NL. Cain, Gio, Stras, Dickey, Kimbrel, Chapman and Cueto just to name some of the contenders.

If he has 10 more starts left anyway on normal rest than that should be plenty to decide it one way or the other. Is 23 wins going to look that much better than 20 or 21, especially in today’s climate where the other pitching stats are valued more than just wins or losses? Just do your best and see what happens. What Reyes did last year was weak and starting extra games on short rest just to get better personal numbers would be weak. I bet Dickey would feel the same way and he’s likely sincere when he says he doesn’t want to go on short rest just for his own personal gain.

The fact that Felix Hernandez and Zach Greinke won Cy Youngs with relatively bad W/L records shows that that stat is not as highly regarded in Cy voting as it once was.

I really hope a pitcher’s W/L record starts to become irrelevant in future Cy Young discussions. It’s such a flawed way to evaluate how talented a pitcher is. Obviously 20-game winners are impressive, but other factors, such as how the offense behind the pitcher plays, influence W/L records, not just how well that guy has pitched.

10 more starts = 5-7 wins if things click the right way. maybe he lowers his ERA to 250ish. but will those numbers be enough for him to win the Cy young?

Are you kidding me? Risking injury to their ace pitcher in September just to win some stupid individual award? If the Mets were still legitimately in the playoff picture I could maybe see it, but otherwise this is just plain dumb. This is the same kind of “thinking” that allowed Johan Santana to throw 134 pitches in his no hit bid coming off of a major injury.
