So he goes to Double A initially to get some work and then will back up Mathis until Arencibia gets healthy. Having Mathis and Torrealba also makes it much easier to trade either Arencibia or d’Arnaud for a starting pitcher during the off season. AA has made it very clear that during the off season, his only priority is to add starting pitching and has assigned scouts to check out potentially available starting pitchers rather than position players. I would not be surprised if he also tries to extend Lyon who is a potential free agent.
