The Rays were foolish to give up on this guy. Current catchers stink, barely hitting their weight.

From the Mets’ point of view it’s a job audition. They are obviously interested in signing Shoppach in the offseason, so this gives them an opportunity to get a firtshand look at how he handles the pitching staff, catches the knucleball, etc. The PTBNL won’t be anything more than organizational fodder. It’s a 45-day free trial period. Pitcher/Catcher chemistry is valued by the current Mets’ FO. It’s one of the reasons they waited so long to demote the godawful Mike Nickeas.

Kratz in Philadelphia is better than Shoppach!! Both at the plate and throwing out runners……..check your stats……..less at bats true, but he has been irreplaceable since Chooch went down.

The Mets’ right hand hitting catchers have all been atrocious this season. Come to think of it, the left hand hitting catcher is pretty bad, too. I guess Alderson finally got tired of watching it. The rest of us were tired of watching it two months ago.

Good work Red Sox front office. It’s not like he would have been worth more before the deadline when you still convinced yourself you had a shot at the playoffs.

Now, let’s see….who will the player to be named be?…..I’m betting on an incredibly light hitting corner outfielder since that is all they ever seem to trade for.

What a great informative article. I can really tell that the writer did his homework and put the details into his article, this for example:

“Shoppach is an impending free agent, so the Mets are apparently picking him up in the hopes he can help them close what is a 9.5-game deficit for the Wild Card. Or something.”

Shoppach hits well against lefties, the catcher market in general is just weak and Alderson doesn’t have to give up much to get him. So meh.

Makes sense, Shoppach has been rumored to be on the trading block for over a month now. Hope they get something usable back for him, but its hard to get anything really for a backup catcher. Oh well, it’s Lavarnway time now
