hahaha . . . yeahhhhh, no.

It's meant to be absurd. Just like it's absurd that a 37-year-old is putting up prime time numbers - and is showing no signs of slowing down.

At least if it were, say Wakefield (who never had a season like Dickey's) or Phil Niekro or someone like that - there would have been a considerable track record already established at age 37 in order to determine how to proceed in setting a price and receiving value and making all parties feel giddy about the deal.

We're kind of witnessing uncharted territory here.

Also are the Met's a couple of moves and year away from contending? Or are they, say 2-3 years down the line . . . and how does Dickey fit into that?

Not an easy situation for Alderson to be in.

Indeed. But Niekro also had a much more substantial body of work than Dickey by age 37. I'm not saying Dickey won't be successful (and I'm rooting for him), just that one great season shouldn't set the price tag for a 37 year old pitcher.

Dickey didn't start knuckleballing until his early 30's and also throws a harder knuckleball than Niekro ever did. Directly comparing him to other knuckleballers at this stage may not be that helpful.

I'm no expert on Ebonics but I think a "Yo" or a "Word" would suffice for succinct agreement. If you really want to emphasize it up, perhaps a "Boi-eeeeee" or two would work, but this might only apply if one is Falvour Flave. You have a big clock to hang around your neck? I think you'll need one of those, too.

ALDERSON: Gosh dern, R.A. we love what you have done for us and would love to extend your contract. Would you be open to that?

DICKEY: Well, sure.

ALDERSON: Great! Here ya go. [pushing piece of paper across desk to Dickey]

DICKEY: What's this?

ALDERSON: Your new extension! Regarding the press conference - is OK if we wait until the end of the season? We'd like to grab some headlines away from the Yanks before the playoffs begin.

DICKEY: [still staring in disbelief at the piece of paper in front of him] Uhmmm, wait. What press conference?

ALDERSON: To announce your extension, silly!

DICKEY: Yeaaaah. About that. This proposal you just gave me is a per year starting point, right?

ALDERSON: Per? Year? Hahahahah [nervous laughter] - oh R.A. you're still such a prankster! Hhehe - that's a 3-year deal, of course.

DICKEY: I was kind of thinking that figure - times three . . .

ALDERSON: [still uncomfortably chuckling] Oh stop it! My sides are splitting! he he ehe

DICKEY: . . . starting in 2013.

ALDERSON: Oh gosh, no more, please! I can barely breathe I'm laughing so hard.

DICKEY: Why are you laughing? [standing up] This isn't funny. [walking towards door]

[Alderson's laughing comes to a sudden stop, a very serious expression emerges]

ALDERSON: R.A. I'm sorry. Please, don't go!

“earlier this season Dickey and the Mets discussed a short-term extension into at least 2014″ but “the team elected to wait and observe Dickey during the course of the season.”

And the Mets' record of making great decisions just continues. Seriously, how much money could they have saved themselves had they done the right thing there?

Typical media fluff piece. I read the article twice looking for mention of extension talks: none. The most accurate statement is that the Mets allegedly discussed an extension, internally.

Essentially, the article states that the Mets will exercise his option for next season and then will wait and see what happens.
