Vance Worley will keep pitching through bone chip in elbow

Vance Worley will eventually need surgery to remove a bone chip from his elbow, but the Phillies right-hander is putting it off until the season is over and continues to pitch through the discomfort.

Problem is, he’s not actually pitching very well.

Worley had a 2.92 ERA and 2.6 strikeouts per walk through the end of June, but in eight starts since then he has a 5.73 ERA and 1.8 strikeouts per walk.

However, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com “he maintains the injury is not a factor in his recent struggles” and “the Phillies said there has been no discussion” about shutting him down early to undergo the relatively minor surgery now.

get the thing fixed now and bring up Tyler Cloyd (who won again last night.)

Cloyd supposedly is one of those guys who wins despite not having great stuff, and the Phillies’ management doesn’t seem to have much faith in overachievers anymore, at least not ones who are under 30 and haven’t been let go by three other organizations.

To me, as long as he eats innings it’s all good.

I could understand this if the Phils were in a pennant race. Might as well get it fixed and head into next season healthy.

Good thing that Mike Rizzo is not the Phillies GM, Vance would be shut down till 2015

This must be some of that elusive Phillies humor I keep hearing so much about. ;)

Actually its that elusive (i.e. makes no sense) Mike Rizzo humor we keep reading about.

What’s the point of pitching through discomfort? It can’t possibly be fun. Do they seriously NOT want to spend an option on a minor leaguer?

Pitching through an injury to close out a meaningless season and potentially jeopardize starting the following season healthy? Makes total sense.

Fine, pitch through July and August. But come September call-ups he had better be shut down if surgery is necessary and the recovery time is longer than a week.
