Great Moments in minor league baseball

You’d think this would come from the low minors, but it’s from Triple-A.  Either way, it’s fantastic:

  • Team on a bad skid is getting killed.
  • Other team has dumb celebration ritual that, while harmless, makes losing team mad.
  • Managers bark at each other.
  • Pitcher for losing team throws ball at hitter, gets himself and manager ejected.
  • Manager yells at pitcher for being immature.
  • Pitcher says “screw it, I quit.” And literally quits baseball. For good.

That’s pretty hilarious, but as for the reason Triple A Padres aren’t winning? Well with all the injuries and under performers the MLB Padres took just about every decent player from Triple A and brought them up. The manager should realize that’s how minor league farm teams work.

I saw Omaha play in Las Vegas last night. As best I could tell, their cup ritual appears to have been discontinued. If ever such a ritual would infuriate a pitcher and his team, a 20 run pasting would be just such an occasion. With that much collective experience in professional baseball, it surprises me that the Storm Chasers apparently didn’t see the potential perils in their celebration. Not worth it- especially when your top prospect had to dodge a fastball up and in.

Omaha is a good team, though. Jake Odorizzi, part of the Greinke deal, tossed 7 shutout innings and allowed only two hits- one of which was an “oled” grounder to the hot corner that was changed to a hit after the game. So, for 6 2/3 innings, I was scoring a no-no. Pretty cool.

The cup ritual doesn’t sound very eco-friendly. Better to come up with their own rendition of the *clap, clap, clap-clap-clap* thing, or even a little organized chanting like at girls softball.

I was wondering what happened in that game to get Myers thrown at AFTER the warning; now I know. To make matters worse for Tucson, he homered in that at bat, off the pitcher who replaced the one who was tossed. Pretty crazy.
