Your point might be valid IF it was correct. Randy left Seattle in '98, Junior in '99 and Pay-Rod went to Texas to play for a "contender" (i.e. a big paycheck) in 2000. NONE of them were part of the 116 win season. It happened after all of them had left Seattle. So your point would be...? (Go Mariners!!!!)

I completely disagree. With the core of Ackley, Seager, Montero, Wells, Saunders, Smoak etc along with the 3 stud pitching prospects that could all be in the rotation in the next 2 years, this is a team that could be a contender as soon as next season.

The idea that Hernandez is going anywhere is rooted in complete ignorance of the Mariners current talent and farm system.

Seattle has some of the best arms in their farms system right now. In addition, the team is very young and promising with a core group of potential studs in Ackley, Seger, Montero, Saunders, Wells, Smoak...this team is on the rise. This team will be a contender and it could be as soon as next season.

Agreed. Nicely put. I'm fed up with Trader Jack, but even moreso with A & L and the owner. How can a team win when its owner doesn't even watch baseball? Until the M's have a committed owner and office, the fans will continue to thin out and the rest will simply endure more years of basement mediocrity. As a huge Ms fan from Alaska, these last 10 years have been exasperating to say the least. If Felix also wants to bail on the Ms, just like Griff, Unit & A-Rod, well okay, then let him go. But if Felix truly wishes to stay in Seattle, then pay him what he's worth, and he will be enshrined in fans hearts forever for his loyalty. Wen the Ms sign a new TV deal, that's when we'll have the jingle to add the few pieces we need to contend.

This argument does not make sense. The M's management did not get thier arms twisted behind their back during the Gillick era. They chose to hire the guy, and he did the job well. That said, Gillick's reputation is for spending the farm system to 'win now' which is why he's a great closer GM for a team that has been on the cusp but has not quite sealed the deal(Toronto, Seattle, Phillies). But he does not do good things for a farm system.

Armstrong and Lincoln's biggest mistake was giving Bavasi as much lattitude as they gave Gillick.

The problem is that a huge chunk of the Phil's payroll is tied up in thier pitching. Turns out you need bats to go along with them. If the Nat's theoretically acquired Felix that would be a $20m/year add. Especially if they then tossed young cost controlled hitters the M's way.

Also, if you are not willing to throw Harper into that deal then it probably is not happening. Start your offer with Harper and Rendon. And probably a high upside AA pitcher.

Was anyone saying the Giants should trade Matt Cain after his perfect game? Was it said that the Mets should trade Johan after his no-no? I can't recall anyone saying either of these things. But Felix has a great game and all of a sudden we should trade him to New York. He throws a perfect game and now we should trade him anywhere? Really? MLB Network was finally saying yesterday we should hold on to him.

Who do you really think we could get for him? Prospects won't cut it. We would need to get established, producing, excellent major league players in return. What team do you think can even provide the value we would need to get in return? Can't be done.

It's not speculation to say he likes playing here once it has been said by the player. Yes, Prince Fielder liked playing in Milwaukee too. Well, Felix already has a contract that pays him like the Cy Young winning pitcher he is. With payroll coming off the books so from, let's face it, bad contracts the M's have the ability to extend him at the 20-25, maybe even 30 million per year for an additional 4-5 years and still compete.

There is a wealth of prospects in the Mariner system as well. From pitchers like Hultzen to catchers like Mizino (yes, I know it's his first year - already at AA) and fielders like Franklin. The M's are ready to compete.

Stop saying the Mariners should trade Felix unless you are ready to say the Yankees should trade Cano, or CC. Or that the Nat's should trade Strasburg or Harper. That would be crazy though, right?

I can’t recall anyone saying either of these things. But Felix has a great game and all of a sudden we should trade him to New York. He throws a perfect game and now we should trade him anywhere? Really? MLB Network was finally saying yesterday we should hold on to him.

Who do you really think we could get for him? Prospects won’t cut it. We would need to get established, producing, excellent major league players in return. What team do you think can even provide the value we would need to get in return? Can’t be done.

It’s not speculation to say he likes playing here once it has been said by the player. Yes, Prince Fielder liked playing in Milwaukee too. Well, Felix already has a contract that pays him like the Cy Young winning pitcher he is. With payroll coming off the books so from, let’s face it, bad contracts the M’s have the ability to extend him at the 20-25, maybe even 30 million per year for an additional 4-5 years and still compete.

There is a wealth of prospects in the Mariner system as well. From pitchers like Hultzen to catchers like Mizino (yes, I know it’s his first year – already at AA) and fielders like Franklin. The M’s are ready to compete.

Stop saying the Mariners should trade Felix unless you are ready to say the Yankees should trade Cano, or CC. Or that the Nat’s should trade Strasburg or Harper. That would be crazy though, right?

Felix is already getting paid what the elite starters in baseball are getting paid. I believe it's around 17.5 million this year, around 19 next year and 20 million in 2014. Ichiro is off the books, Figgins goes off the books after this year. We have the money to extend him at 20-25 for 4 more years AND still go get a big FA bat.

Difference being, the Phillies pitchers were much older. None of the Nats Big 4 would be older than 27 next year if they made the trade.

If they did the deal, I would imagine that something along the lines of Ross Detwlier, Alex Meyer Anthony Rendon and Steve Lombardozzi would be the offer. That's potentially two-fifths of Seattle's rotation (a hard throwing lefty with three years left of team control and a righty who can top 99 on the gun), the top college bat from last year's draft and a good starting 2nd basemen who can lead off.

I'm from Oregon originally, I didn't grow up with a team, although I was a fan of Bonds so I tended to follow the Giants as a kid.

I follow most teams, honestly, and can give you a rundown as thorough as this one of nearly half the league. I am a fan of the game, not of any single team.

The reason I'd like to see the M's run the right way is because seeing a well run team execute is the thing I enjoy the most about the sport. Fluke teams do not interest me. Teams that make tons of mistakes but can buy their way out of them do not interest me. But teams that do things right interest me, even if the end result is not the wins they should have for their efforts(luck can sabotage even the best built teams).

The Rays are probably the best run franchise in the game, in terms of executing from top to bottom organizationally. I also think the Brewers get a lot right. The A's are another I admire, and I liked the Red Sox teams from 2004-2008 or so. The Yankees in the mid-90's were great, at least for people who admire the aspects of the game that I do.

Conversely, the Giants are atrocious to follow. Dodgers, Marlins and the Yankees since 1999 or so. And easily the most horrible batch I've ever seen(perhaps because of my proximity), has to be the Bavasi years with the M's. That said, I don't live in Pittsburgh.

Reflex - the reason that Armstrong and Lincoln were good in the 90's was because of the control they had to give up to get Gillick and Pinella in the first place - those deals are fact and in print. Being the baseball "men" G&P were, they would have never agree'd to come to Seattle without guaranttee's to that effect. When G got run out of town, word hit the street in MLB about A&L's medling. A&L's only real option they had was hiring a novice like Bavasi they could beat like a drum.... They day B signed, someone in the organization told me B didn't know baseball like his old man and that the M's were going to tank, bank on it. They did. Each and every B deal was run through A&L. I'll ask you this: "IF A&L were of keen eye and such astute baseball genius', why would all of a sudden they allow the novice B to start dealing the top prospects - risking tanking the juggernaut of a team/system G&P had put together?"
I do like what Jack is doing with the farm system but A&L will have only enough patience until losing, gate receipts and team revenue risk their jobs..... then I'm afraid trader Jack and Wedge will be out and we start a new.

I agr that I'm not a big fan of this particular writer bit what he's saying, as jerky as the tone of it always is with him, isn't exactly wrong. My Brewers have to do the same thing. It sucks but is generally how it goes. Unless Seattle does something soon why would he want to re-sign there? Most players don't want to sign somewhere that winning doesn't look possible. As of right now the Mariners dont seem to be too close.

Reflex, it sounds like you know your stuff regarding the M's, they're one of the numerous sports franchises with a world championship drought streak spanning their entire existence.

You say you're not a Seattle fan, so I don't understand why you would have a vested interest in seeing good M's baseball. Your tax dollars or other contributions are likely supporting the team anyway. If you're a fan of another team from your past, keep supporting that team if you want. This isn't the old Soviet Union, we as fans have the freedom to remain loyal to any team from where we lived before. I've lived in places where I could care less about the local team, it meant absolutely nothing to me.

I'm beginning to think that sportswriters call for trades just so they will have something to write about. After enjoying years watching Ken Griffey. Alex Rodriquez, Randy Johnson, Jay Buhner and Edgar Martinez the Mariner's few remaining fans have exactly one great player to still root for. Trading Felix would be a kick in the teeth. Besides, the Mariners have been trading good pitchers for prospects for several years, and all these great 'prospects' have stunk.
