The offense is slumping right now, and has been for a week. Partially due to injuries (Smith out, Cespedes wrist) and by some guys cooling off (if Carter is in fact a 1.000 OPS guy, even the Great and Powerful Beane will be surprised, if not shocked). Then there was the elephant in the room (hat tip to old A's logo): non-performers unaddressed at the trade deadline: Pennington, Weeks, and catcher.

In the days of the old Oriole dynasty, to compete with the Yankees Weaver & Co built a team that was strong defensively up the middle, even if some offense was sacrificed there. They made up for a lack of superstars at a spot or two with veteran platoons, and they had very strong pitching.

Sounds like the A's except for the consistency part, and the part about strong defense up the middle. Weeks is ok, not strong, and Crisp is declining, according to UZR. I do believe he has lost a step, but he seems able to get to a lot of balls still. His arm has clearly declined to approaching Damon levels. That's why Reddick and
Cespedes cut him off more regularly than do most corner outfielders cut off their center fielders.

In any event, while the blue print is clear, the execution is still sporadic. Remember before the A's huge July they had gone 0-9 at one point in the Spring. Hopefully there is still time to get healthy and get back in the Wild Card race.
