Out since mid-July with a torn oblique muscle, Ian Desmond is off the disabled list and back in the Nationals’ lineup well ahead of schedule.

Desmond was having a breakout season before the injury, hitting .286 with 17 homers and an .825 OPS in 89 games while making his first All-Star team. In his absence manager Davey Johnson shifted Danny Espinosa from second base to shortstop and used Stephen Lombardozzi as the everyday second baseman.

To make room for Desmond’s return Washington designated veteran infielder Cesar Izturis for assignment.

Excellent news here in Natland, where we all hope they can now pull out of the slump they are mired in. What? OK, so 2 losses in their last 10 may not meet the strict definition of a slump, and being first out of 30 in MLB is pretty good, but we still don’t like seeing the Braves as close as 4 back.

This is just a tough young man. First he gutted through the injury for as long as he could and maintained outstanding production and now he’s back in action well before he was projected to return.
