You people that are suggesting that the cubs wait to give him a contract do not understand how baseball contracts work. The cubs just dodged arbitration and free agency with the guy who lead the national league in base hits last year. Good job, cubs.

Some players need the carrot, some need the stick. There’s nothing wrong with giving a young athlete, previously plagued with bouts of bad judgement and lack of concentration, stuck within a culture of losing, a long contract filled with millions of dollars. It’s just another approach to squeezing out every ounce of potential from developing athletes. What could go wrong?

We’re talking about a 22 year old 2-time all-star here. He’s so young that he’s got to improve and this contract isn’t obscene by MLB standards at all. I’m all for this deal.

Considering Castro rarely realizes when there’s 2 outs or 3 outs, I think the Cubs may have been able to get him cheaper for longer – he never would have known the difference.

The guy almost got benched by the manager because he doesn’t have his head in the game several times this year and they reward him with a large contract. I don’t get it. They could wait until next year around this same time to do so after proving he can keep his head in the game.
