On Red Sox radio pre-game show last night, Bobby was doing well giving a Francona-style answer to the question of what the Red Sox will do if Crawford goes on the DL. Bobby was doing very well with that until the very last sentence fragment in which he stated:

“so we’ll wait to see what happens with Carl before we make our adjustments”

If the average person made that statement it may or may not reveal anything, but with Valentine (and again I overall I like the job he has done) he is extremely Freudian in his speaking.

The idea that he needed TJ surgery surfaced months ago. I want to say it was even before the season started, but I might be wrong on that. Either way, it was at the very latest in May. What should have happened was that they just washed this season, cut he up then and then he’d be aces by spring training. But no, all the pressure from signing a huge contract and having an off year last year meant he had to come back this year and prove himself. And thus here we are now.

They want Carl to sacrifice spring training so they can continue to “believe” in Boston? What a joke, a miserable, unfunny joke. How dare they.

It would be great if Carl could get his contract nullified and go play in a place where they believe the actual game of baseball is important instead of plaques, bricks, and coffee table books.

The Sox were 44-44 without Carl Crawford and 14-18 with him. Again, how does losing him impact their winning? How is shutting him down throwing in the towel? He’s been hot of late but he’s hasn’t been carrying the team since his return or anything.

But yes, I understand that you’re bitter about the sellout streak. Let it go man, it means nothing more than it was a pain in the ass for fans to get tickets when they were winning. If that’s really your whole concern and the root of your bitterness, you really need to reassess your perception of the importance of sports.

it’s throwing in the towel and admitting the season is over. Yeah they were “selling out’ the first half of the season cause the fans had hope they would turn it around. front office is all about perception and massaging the truth so people will continue overpaying for tickets.

Exactly. Why didn’t they have this meeting one month ago. Carl will have his surgery and Scott Posednik will do a great job. Next year Carl will have a new development. 7 years, $140 million goes a long way.

I wasn’t aware the entire fate of the team rested on the shoulders of Carl Crawford. Since they were selling out the first half of the season without Crawford playing, i don’t see how shutting him down now would actually effect their ability to sell tickets.

“fate” is a four letter word; however it over dramatizes the situation. I am sure that there have been more fateful instances in his life. “Medium term baseball outlook” is probably more accurate. As far as the Red Sox are concerned, they are unlikely to win the world series in the next couple of years, so get it over with if it needs to be done.
