If that’s going to be 55% of the lineup even with Crawford playing, why not throw in the towel and try to hit 2013 as healthy as possible?

Why should a player play with that kind of pain? Especially if it seems to be (most likely) affecting his performance. It’s not like he’s leaving the surgery to January/February of 2013 just to screw with the team. He wants it done now so, presumably, he can stop playing badly and stop being in serious pain when 2013 rolls around.

See if this helps: He was injured in late April, and rehabbed without surgery, trying to avoid needing surgery. He did make it back but was told surgery was inevitable. Surgery hurts. Rehab hurts. He’s trying to be ready for next year, hoping to be healthy the whole season, not just either the start or end of it.

What is more important to a team – that you are ready to play at the beginning of the season or able to play at the end of the season? I dont want to sound insensitive here, Carl knows Carl best and Carl feels its best for Carl not to wait. But if he was able to play, why not try to make a difference and set an example for his teammates? Instead it seems like he did the opposite thing. Maybe I’ll feel different in a few months or if the Redsox make the playoffs anyway. But even Manny eventually played for his teammates. I really want to be wrong here.

6 months of post-operative rehab takes him to February, which of course is when spring traing starts. Of course complications and setbacks can happen to delay that timetable. The best way to try to ensure 2013 isn’t adversely impacted is to do the surgery now.

6-9 months isn’t a certainty he will be back if he waited until October. the Sox and cc are doing the right thing. they aren’t going anywhere this year.

The Red Sox season is over, theres no reason not to do it now. Let Podsednik take left for now and let Jackie Bradley Jr play in September, if Bradley flourishes, trade Ellsbury this winter.
