Chris Perez continues to be, um, colorful, gets into profane exchange with a fan

Chris Perez has seen his fair share of controversy this year. He’s challenged the fan base. He has gesticulated and emoted in ways that have really pissed off the opposition. He got all Internet Tough Guy and tweeted about how he’s gonna plunk Royals hitters.  He, inexplicably, went to war with the beloved Kenny Lofton.

But — and I am only linking, not describing, because it’s a bit NSFW for us — Deadspin explains that he’s now getting into the kind of thing that could lead to a suspension.  Just ask Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell. And yes the fan was being a jerk too, but the player has to not take that kind of bait and certainly not get into profane exchanges with fans. Bad, bad form in my view.

But even if Perez doesn’t get in trouble over this, it’s bad news for him.  Because it’s not like we haven’t seen this story a million times. A high-energy, colorful in-your-face relief pitcher wears on people’s nerves, though generally gets ignored and gets eye-rolls when he’s saving all of the games. The second that fastball goes away, however, he becomes just another bullpen arm. That attitude wears thin, and his life expectancy in the game is way shorter than your average, workaday reliever.

But hey, if Perez wants the Kenny Powers career path, that’s his prerogative.

Kenny Fucking Powers says this act is old.

    • willclarkgameface - Aug 20, 2012 at 11:17 AM

and hey Oakland fans – this act is old as well and usually seen at Raiders games. I was, however, at Game 1 of the 2003 ALDS vs. Boston sitting next to an obnoxious fan that kept requesting A’s pitchers “throw it at their face”.

      All class Oakland. All class.

Carl Crawford wishes all Red Sox games were played in Oakland.

Great fans those A’s have. You stay classy Oakland

    • beefytrout - Aug 20, 2012 at 11:44 AM

wasn’t it A’s fans who were heckling the Rangers players about a circumstance involving a child? I’m talking about the Frank Francisco chair-throwing incident.

  3. frenchysplatediscipline - Aug 20, 2012 at 11:38 AM

A’s fans? What does who he roots for have anything to do with this? EVERY park has hecklers. And to be honest – until he drops the C word at the end (and only under his breath to his friend), he doesn’t even swear, making this actually more classy than most hecklers.

More like stay classy Chris Perez. You put your arms up in a fighting pose like “Here I am” to a fan in the crowd? Did you expect him to jump in and get arrested? And THEN you drop the salary remark? All the while cussing up a blue streak? Are you fucking serious? Is this the Jersey Shore?

More like stay classy Chris Perez. The guy’s right – piece of garbage.

    • frenchysplatediscipline - Aug 20, 2012 at 11:40 AM

That being said – why the hell was Carlos Zambrano in Oakland and why does he harbor such dislike for Perez???

    • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Aug 20, 2012 at 12:40 PM

      regarding the salary remark:

There’s a great interview where Neil deGrasse Tyson is telling Stephen Colbert how NDT tried, three separate times, to get James Cameron to admit that he screwed up on the sky in the rescue scene. Cameron responds with something like, last I checked, titanic grossed about $5 B worldwide, imagine how much more money it’d have made if he got the sky right.

NDT was so dejected until Colbert reminded him that to win the argument, Cameron had to retreat to his piggy bank.

      • cur68 - Aug 20, 2012 at 1:04 PM

Your comment prompted me to find NDT, at a gathering of astrophysicists, describing writing to and talking to Cameron about the sky. I am in little nerd haven right now. NDT is our Leader and he is funny.

      • hittfamily - Aug 20, 2012 at 1:19 PM

I have never seen that interview but I have seen several of his lectures at Harvard, and later to google employees while promoting “Pluto Files”. His sit down he did with Richard Dawkins was brilliant.

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Aug 20, 2012 at 2:13 PM

It’s extremely long, but as I’ve watched it about 10 times, I can say it’s really really good. Some of the best parts are:

        Jim Cameron part: 35:10
Pluto no longer a planet: 56:30
        Isaac Newton commentary: 1:10:20

What a douchebag that fan was, he started the verbal altercation and Perez fired back and put that bitch fan in his place hahaha

    • tfbuckfutter - Aug 20, 2012 at 12:52 PM

Yeah….”take the dick out of your mouth” is such a witty rejoinder.

  5. hockeyflow33 - Aug 20, 2012 at 12:42 PM

There are people who don’t like this? The fan was being a complete dick and I’m glad Perez got in his face.

    • hittfamily - Aug 20, 2012 at 1:41 PM

I hope he is suspended. The fan was being a fan. Not my type of fan, but yelling at a player from a long distance away is something that happens everyday, in every ball park. Perez walking over from 150 feet away to yell “fuck” a dozen times at the top of his lunges, and then polishing it off with a gay reference, then requesting the fan be removed is unacceptable in the big leagues. His mother wasn’t insulted. He wasn’t threatened. Perez just decided to be obscene for the sake of being obscene.

It wasn’t big league of him, and he deserves to miss a few of those big league paychecks he is so proud of.

“Mom, they’re professional athletes, they’re used to this kind of thing, it rolls right off their back!”

I’m sure that idiot would have kept his mouth shut if he were on the field with Perez instead of sitting safe in the stands with security protecting him…This kind of stuff makes me laugh because the players always get criticized for firing back at these people who think they can say whatever they want because they bought a ticket…Perez and anyone else getting heckled have the right to confront people if they want to, especially someone who made it a point to call him out and then continue to keep going once he was asked to stop…It’s a shame Perez couldn’t have found a way to “overthrow” someone in the outfield and hit this guy with the ball

    • hittfamily - Aug 20, 2012 at 2:19 PM

Actually, it was Perez who said anything he wanted, and it was Perez who had security intervene. And when did he “ask” the guy to stop. Telling the opposing teams closer he isn’t any good is harmless.

“Blow some more saves, bro. Blow some more saves. Both of you. You and guy … blow some more saves.”

“I got more saves than your whole fucking team does, so why don’t you go look at those stats, you fucker.”

  8. bigleagues - Aug 20, 2012 at 2:34 PM

It seems Deadspin chose to spin this story a little in order to get the angle they wanted.

I find it Interesting that the writer at Deadspin chose to start the transcript AFTER ‘The Fan’ says:

“And bring your boy with you . . . you asked me to come down here. Well, here I am.”

As Perez and his teammate approaches the stands, ‘The Fan’ then points at Perez’ teammate and then at Perez as “The Fan’ taunts “Fuck you and Fuck you”.

    That’s when excerpted transcript begins.

It’s obvious that this incident did not start at the beginning of this video clip. Could have or should have Chris Perez ignored this antagonistic no-life sorry excuse of a fan? Yeah.

Aside from the fact that Chris Perez doesn’t seem to be the brightest bulb in the bunch, everyone has their breaking points. Perhaps what precedes this clip is a string of insults and taunting by this obviously saintly well-intentioned Fan.

‘The (so-called) Fan’ obviously arrived at the ballpark early and likely had such an encounter on his agenda.

    • sabatimus - Aug 20, 2012 at 3:28 PM

Exactly. Perez should probably be fined for his actions, but the “fan” ought to have been ejected for his conduct. I’ve seen fans get ejected for far less.

  9. sabatimus - Aug 20, 2012 at 3:22 PM

I love how the fan says “[expletive] you and [expletive] you”, and then at 0:58 says “[Perez] is swearing and I’m not.”

The fan is a real man. Really. I bet his balls swelled up afterward.

  10. djpostl - Aug 20, 2012 at 4:01 PM

Lol, don’t know what’s better…his weak ass insults or the fact the Perez actually thinks he got All-Star nod for any reason other than the team had to have someone there by rule. I mean, it’s not like 3 or 4 other closers embarrassed him statistically in comparison but were left at home.
