If you can’t hit, you need to at least be a great fielder. Bartlett played 162 games with the Padres and made 23 errors.. I don’t see him being a good pickup for any team since really all he can play is SS and not very well.

His defense was mediocre. Not great, not terrible. Neither Fangraphs nor B-R likes his defense either. It was good enough to live with if he could hit a little, but he couldn’t. Combine that with the rebuilding/youth movement, and Bartlett was a goner. Only his injury kept him from being dumped at the same time as O-Dog.

Bartlett’s replacement, Everth Cabrera, is seven years younger, at least as good if not better (which isn’t saying much), and not coming off an injury. Hardly another Wally Pipp scenario.

Maybe even with the Rays again. I always thought he had a nice swing, and with the proper manager he could flourish again. And yes, he had a really good glove too, something that position has consistently lacked since he left – with the exception of Brignac, whose bat is non-existent.

Some team is going to have a good back up infielder next season. I am sure that many teams will look at him.
