Time to make Red Sox and Angels fans feel even worse

Aug 20, 2012, 2:31 PM EDT

These tweets from Mike DiGiovanna are not news or rumors — just a guy thinking out loud — but they probably make Angels and Red Sox fans feel bad:

At least Anaheim fans have some fond memories of Lackey. Not at all sure what Red Sox fans have done to deserve Vernon Wells.

It’d be fun for the rest of us, though.

    It doesn’t make me sad.

Those Tweets are outrageously funny – mainly because it shows how absurd some pundit speculation is.

I may not be a John Lackey fan, but even I recognize that he has far more value than Vernon Wells currently has.

In fact, I’d take Lackey on the DL for a year over a healthy Vernon Wells.

And then there is the question that is begging to be asked . . . just HOW DOES VERNON WELLS FIT INTO THE RED SOX PLANS ON ANY LEVEL?!

And the answer is – rather obviously – he doesn’t.

First, you don’t have to say that you’re not a John Lackey fan. That is one of those things that nobody ever needs to say because it’s completely obvious.

Second….I can tell you how Vernon Wells fits into the Red Sox plans. It’s actually very obvious through the trades they have made this year…..they are trying to corner the market on terrible outfielders.

The part I’m curious about though is Vernon Wells actually has some power. Even moreso than Marlon Byrd.

Of course the guy is suggesting the Angels make that suggestion. No way the Red Sox fall for that lunacy, unless the Angels agree to pay for both Lackey and Wells’ contracts. We;;s gets paid $6 million more per year the next two years, and Lackey’s been more valualbe (from a WAR standpoint) on the DL than Wells has on the field this year.

Lackey is owed $15.25m in ’13 and ’14. Wells is owed $21m in ’13 and ’14. Also, because Lackey underwent TJ surgery it triggered a club option in ’15 for the MLB minimum. So Lackey is owed about $31.5m over the next 3 seasons. If he has a good first half next season he could be dealt at the deadline

The only way this happens is if the Red Sox also force the Angels to take on Beckett’s contract. Don’t see this happening.

  3. proudlycanadian - Aug 20, 2012 at 2:51 PM

Here are a couple of ways to dump a bad contract. You can place a player on waivers in August and hope that a contending team will take him or you can package one bad contract for 2 bad contracts (hopefully of shorter duration). In other words, a package of Lackey and Beckett might tempt Boston. You then hope that you can subsequently dump (give away) one or more of the incoming players.

Perhaps the red sox will trade Beckett and Lackey for AJ Burnett?

Oh the joy of being a blogger who baits certain teams fans all day long. Nothing better, right?

quite possibly the dumbest idea I’ve ever read! I pray that this doesn’t even be considered!

  7. heelbostonfan - Aug 20, 2012 at 3:00 PM

I’d take a bottle of tobacco spit in exchange for Lackey.

  8. hokiegajanisgod - Aug 20, 2012 at 3:06 PM

    Vernon Wells-for-John Lackey?

sure, the Red Sox will glaly make that deal if the Angels eat the ENTIRE remaining amount of Vernon’s contract.

    Starting pitching is expnsive.

Holy shit this is brilliant. Tell John to take Josh with him and you can 100% sign me up for this debacle.

“Not at all sure what Red Sox fans have done to deserve Vernon Wells.”

They’re the Nation. Is that not enough?
