Three weeks after receiving a three-game suspension for making contact with a home plate umpire Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco is ready to actually start serving his punishment tonight.

His suspension has been reduced from three games to two games, so Mesoraco will sit out tonight and tomorrow while the Reds call up Dioner Navarro from Triple-A to serve as fill-in catching depth.

Part of the delay was due to Mesoraco missing time with a concussion, but he’s been on the active roster since August 9 while MLB took its time ruling on his appeal.

Is this even that big of a deal? He’s a backup anyways.

Backup huh? Reds pretty much do a catcher by committee. Even though Mesoraco has the lower stats of the two, doesn’t mean he’s a backup. He starts often so this is actually a big deal. A move had to be made from the minors to fill in for Mesoraco. Chances are the team is arranged to where pitchers that are starting these two games will be pitchers that Hannigan catches for so Mesoraco probably would not have started anyway. But to say he’s a backup is false.

Okay, he’s a below average starting catcher. Is that better?

Below average? He’s a rookie and has historically started slow.

It’s not may anymore. You can say that he’s had a disappointing rookie season.

He had a slow start in the minors. I wasn’t expecting him to reach his potential until sometime next season based on his history. Not everyone can be Joey Votto or Mike Trout as rookie. Some take time like Brandon Phillips. If we give up on every single player then you end up like the Indians and trade away Brandon Phillips and Sean Casey for nothing.

The real story will be when they start suspending umpires for misconduct.

      Has that happened yet?

the problem with mesoraco is he is stuck behind hannigan who is a pretty good starting catcher. that and the fact he played very little last after he was called up did not help him prepare for this year at all. most teams use the Sept. call ups to give them a taste of the big leagues but the reds under baker thought it better to play the veteran hernandez who everybody knew was not coming back instead of the prized prospect. it is not that big of a surprise he is not having a oustanding year when he catches only 2 of the reds starters 1 of which sucks massivly in Leake.
