One of these days someone is going to have to give credit the to Texas Rangers’ ability to correctly evaluate talent. Baseball, as with any other sport, cannot be perfect in evaluations of future results. Rather it is a case of making correct judgements more often than not and better than your competitors. In that regard the Rangers have been dong a great job in the past several years and the results are evident by their record and the overall depth of the organization. Of course you cannot forsee how injuries will effect your decisions, however the Rangers have been able to overcome those the past two years because of their depth; a result of their talent evaluations. Whoever is responsible for those evaluations, and I’m sure there are several, should be congratulated.

This looks correct to me.

Hunter’s 2012 season is at 2.4 HR per 9 IP. The record is Jose Lima in 2000 with 2.2 HR per 9 IP.

Hindsight is great, isn’t it?

At the time, Lackey and Crawford looked like good, reliable players. Beltre looked overvalued because of one good season. I am a Sox fan and as disappointed about these outcomes as anyone, but I really don’t see how they failed to correctly evaluate these players. At worst, they slightly overpaid Lackey and Crawford. Beyond that, it is simply luck.

I agree. A 5-year $80,000,000 deal seemed way too steep for a 32 year old with only two really good seasons in a long career. I am glad he has been successful so far, but even given what he has done already, the Rangers could come to regret this contract.

Gee, I’m SO glad the Red Sox let this guy go. He was WAY too expensive, and no place to put him.

I mean, they were SO prudent with their money…Beltre just wasn’t worth it, considering how they were patiently waiting in the wings to sign Crawford and lackey.

How prudent of them…real wizards, they are.

This isn’t Beltre’s first career 3-run homer game.

He hit 3 HR in Game 4 of the ALDS last year vs the Rays. Which puts him on a small list of Pujols, Brett, and Babe Ruth to hit 3 HR in a game in both the regular and post season.

As a sox fan I really do wish that the Sox kept him over Kevin Youkilis, but it woulda had to have been on a shorter deal than the one he has now. Between Middlebrooks and Bogaerts the Sox have impact bats on the left side of the infield coming up. Still, nice to see him being successful past his time with the Sox

Michael Young most definitely touched his head after the third homer. They showed the replay of it on the stadium scoreboard and everything. It was all good.

I’m actually surprised Buck Showalter decided to pitch to him after the second and third home runs. I for one wouldn’t want to be known as the manager who gave up two 4-home run games in the same season… to the same team.

What a huge free agent signing two years ago. Otherwise, the Rangers would have Michael Young still playing at 3B. Both the Red Sox and Angles really missed out on signing this guy. Keep it up Adrian!
