Phillies fans did a good job giving Joe Blanton a thick skin

Calcaterra is taking a long lunch today, so I’m going to pick up the Phillies fans trolling slack with this little tidbit from the Los Angeles Times about Joe Blanton‘s rough start last night:

Blanton departed from the field to the collective boos of the 56,000 fans who were drawn to Dodger Stadium by a bobblehead promotion featuring Fernando Valenzuela. … He didn’t appear bothered by the hostile send-off he received from his new home fans, who watched their team fall to the Giants twice in as many days.

“I’ve played in Philly,” Blanton said. “That’s nothing.”

Philadelphia: Preparing athletes to be booed by occasionally angry fans in other cities since forever.

Class act, and a good pitcher.

Rock solid in the World Series run.

I’d say league average pitcher at best

At least his thick skin didn’t come from the same source as Bartolo’s

actually, we never really booed him much… never really expected much from heavy b either…

Yeah, well….being “never really booed much” by Philly standards is probably still more aggressive booing than he’ll hear anywhere else.

Speaking of thick skin, he was a better pitcher before he dropped a lot of weight.

    Does he have battery callouses?

Sigh, you can do better than this.

HAHA. Come on Fat Joe we weren’t even rough with you. Other than calling you beloved names like Heavy B and Fat Joe what else did we say about you? You had more wins than any other pitcher on the staff not named Cole. You were good to go in my book.

As the owner of one of the most heartbreaking moments in Philadelphia sports history, Mitch Williams said, “Philly fans are not booing the player, they are booing the performance.” That’s a guy who gets it. I don’t know why others don’t. It’s a simple concept.

He knew the deal; you get booed for below average starts and get cheered for anything better. It’s not like it was boos or nothing. Heavy B threw his fair share of clunkers.
